Dual boot XP and 7 on 128gb SSD?

I have an old XP laptop (as many of you already know by now), and I want to install Windows 7 alongside its Windows XP installation, but I’m not sure A) how to set up a dual boot and B) I don’t know if I’ll have enough wiggle room on my little SSD for it to work. With only Windows XP installed with all of my files, 63.7 of the 111gb are being used (most of that is virtual machine crap). Will that allow enough room to install Windows 7 with a dual boot setup, and how would I do it?

You would have enough space, but remember the less free space you have, the slower it will run

To dual-boot, you need to create seperate partitions for both XP and 7.

Well that makes sense. But I don’t know how to split the partitions, especially with windows XP and all of my files already installed on the existing partition.

I dual boot XP and 7 but I started with a 160GB hard drive. I’d advise you to look at everything on XP and start moving things off before you do anything.

I followed this article, using EASEUS Partition Magic (my XP and 7 are 32 bit version so it was free) installed in XP. and it worked out well.

My XP partition is 58.9GB with 39.GB used.
My 7 partition is 80.1GB with 38.1 used.

I’ve been using this computer (my daily workhorse) since April 2014.

After I had it set up, I went in and changed the time to boot my default OS, Win 7, from something like 20 seconds to 7 seconds. That gives me time to select XP if I want to boot into it but it is too long a drag if I’m anxious to get 7 to load.

Sorry! I thought I posted an update after the message about surgery… I was going to let everyone know that we can be done with this topic for now because the product key for Windows 7 Home Premium that I had wasn’t allowing me to download the Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft’s website because it’s a Dell product service key. I have the product key, but I still need an ISO, so I think I’ll just buy a disk on eBay. They’re relatively cheap. I wanted to use the tool/app from majorgeeks, but it just wasn’t working.

@plodr let me know that the Windows and Office downloader tool from majorgeeks.com is now working again, so I was able to download Windows 7 Home Premium, use a GParted Live CD to split my partitions, and then install Windows 7 on the new partition. My computer gives me 30 seconds by default to pick which OS I want to boot into, and overall, everything is working great!
