whoops, see what you mean, just downloaded the file from where i said ,and downloaded to my stick drive, probably no good anyway ??
    such a muppet i am.
The pc in question was bought from a now well known retailer on the high st, and came with no recovery disks etc.
so are you telling me that a copy is no good, unless i have software to open it ?

This is also valid, and easy, but may be intimidating:

            Hi all, quick update,
Been reading loads of stuff, checked out all the links antman has sent, and now “Brain” Has “Crashed” lolo_O
I have so far been able to access the system recovery tools, start up repair etc etc
When start up repair scans and ends, text says windows can not fix this computer automatically
I am given the opportunity to enter cmd prompt window, so is there a way i can fix the corrupted registry
file via this route ?? and what steps, (please remember my time zone is "Pensioner Mode) so the instructions
would need to be literally one by one:unsure:.
Hope the above makes sense, I do realise if this is a no go, i will have to re-install windows,
I have saved all her data, and should be able to put it all back, i will be asking for help there too.
            Thanks for help, stupo

While you have the disk attached to another PC for file recovery, run a SMART test on the drive and a chkdsk. It is possible, if unlikely, that a disk or file system failure is at play.

I use CrystalDiskInfo standard edition only because I always have.
Download - Crystal Dew World [en]

Passmark has a decent tool, also.
PassMark DiskCheckup - SMART hard drive monitoring utility

It is possible that a re-install of Windows is prudent here. But, not if the drive is bad.

This is a simple test. 5 minutes time on task.

You did not report the results.

Did you attempt a normal startup after running chkdsk?

Hi Antman, sorry for the delay, but the most inconvenient task known as work gets in the way from time to time
I ran a check on the drive with the link you provided (passmark) , and i have the results in front of me, status listed as ok no faults.
done the disk self test (5 minute job) and says no faults, so drive ok ??? or any other checks that need doing ??.
i have read about a reinstall, and what i should back up, i have literally, backed up everything on the drive, and the recovery partition,
which has 10 gig free of 19, there is also another partition, that says there is nothing there, but 70 mb available of 99.9mb ?
                    whats that please ?
I will need some help on restoring files to the new install, where to put what, and when, what order etc,
I have a windows install usb flash drive, with the same operating system version, and the product key off the pc itself
                    to activate windows again.
so, i suppose its time to take the plunge Unless, anything else i need to know, or do, or tryo_O
Thanks for bearing with me, but this " Pensioner Time Zone" takes some getting used to.
You know your getting there, when, the “saga over 50 adverts” are being dropped through the door on a “Daily Basis”

OK. That’s good news on the health of your disk.

Before you re-install, try running the particular failing update kb947821 by doing it manually.
                        https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=3132

Oddly, the purpose of this update is to prevent failing updates.

What ever back up software you have used you will use to restore.
You should be able to tell it to restore to original directories or select witch one. Most back up software allows this to be done.

If you dragged and dropped the files or copy and pasted them to the external storage device.

As a precaution I will also suggest that you have more than one copy. Backups can fail and NOT on the same drive if that drive fails…

Hi Rustys, thanks for taking time to look,
I just highlighted all the data on the drive and sent to my documents, then copied to another drive, via my docking station.
so when i install windows again, i just plug in my drive and copy the stuff i need, is this right ??
Will it be that easy ?? how will i know what goes where, forgive my ignorance, but never done this before:notworthy:

Do a test restore. This way you will also know that the files restore with out issue.
