Can't connect Sony PS3 to my PC

I’ve inherited a Sony PS3 and I’ve wasted a whole day trying to connect it to my laptop. I’ve also become aware that almost anything to do with PS3s can get horrendously complicated, judging by the (often) conflicting advice there is out there on the web. Personally, ALL I want to do is watch Blu-ray films, period. . . but even now I can’t get the laptop to recognise the PS3 !

My Asus notebook is running Windows 8.1

    Many thanks.

PS (re link below) For some weird reason my edition of Win 8.1 doesn’t have ‘Network and Internet’, nor ‘Homegroup and sharing’.

Step 1. Make  sure  your  PC  and  PlayStation 3  are both on the  same network  or this  will not  work. Step 2. Go to  the  control panel of  your PC  and  locate  NETWORK AND INTERNET click on t…

No expert in PS3 but I’ve got mine hooked up to a TV and use it to watch DVDs on.
I think your issue is my TV has an ‘in’ port that accepts a signal from the PS3, your laptop doesn’t.
It only has ‘out’ ports for transmitting it’s signal to other devices.
In other words I don’t see how it could possibly do what you want.

          Maybe this may help some.
Look and see if you have some thing called Network and Sharing Center
You might have to go into the control panel to get to this.

This may also depend on what your control panel comes up in category or list view.
Step 2. Go to the control panel of your PC and locate NETWORK AND INTERNET click on the sub link for HOMEGROUP AND SHARING
From reading this line that tells me that the control panel is in category view.

It may help if you provide a screen shot of the control panel as you see it.
