Issues with File Explorer - Windows 10

    Hello,

So around 3-4 weeks ago, opening media files or WPS office files took ages to open. If you right-click them they lag and it you try to open them, they can take 8-10 seconds to open. It was annoying but I lived with it. But now when I go into File Explorer on C drive or another drive, no matter how much media is in the file it loads for ages, and sometimes crashes.

I have run AVG and there is no malware or viruses. It is worth noting it works better at boot then gets progressively worse. Also, something I have been aware of for a while, indexing is turned off. I am not sure if this is related, but I believe it is. I work on this computer and is getting harder to do my job, so any advice would be greatly received.

    Lets start here.

Run a System File Checker see if it helps.

Log into the computer using a different user and see if the issue still exists.

    Try a clean boot.

Just to add to this. I just had to restart my computer as it kept crashing every time I go on file explorer. I have now booted up and seems to work (for now) again.

I ran the SFC and it stated - Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them

        Any further action needed?

Rerun the SFC and see if it finds any more issues.
Test and see otherwise attempt the other things suggested.

can we also get your complete PC specs.

get Speccy; Speccy - Download Builds
in Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot (hit Yes if prompted to proceed with publish) > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
now you can paste that link into your next post.

                Is Speccy safe?

                I’d also be running these from an elevated command prompt;
                [ul]
                [li]chkdsk c: /r[/li][li]sfc /scannow (your’ve done one, but another will show if successful)[/li][li]dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth[/li][li]dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase[/li][/ul]

Hi Guys, Sorry for the late response. So I ran sfc scan three times. The first time it found errors and it fixed them: the second two times, no issues.

I have run speccy. The viewer is below.

I have also just created a new user, and navigated on that profile. That seemed to work with no issues. So it could be the profile

Since running the system file checker on the affected user has that made a difference.

Yes, it is a profile issue since the newly created user works correctly.

Here are a couple of links that may help correcting the issue worst case scenario we just transfer files to the new user that works.

                          Microsoft
i had many troubles with windows file explorer lately. 90% of the times when i try to open/move/copy a file, or go to a folder, the explorer stops responding, restarts and then again. i tried every advise i've seen so far, like changing the folder…

I’d be going down the path of transferring your old profile to the new one.
it’s not as scary as it sounds.

any software you have installed will be for the PC, not for an individual user so you won’t need to install any thing again.

you’ll need to move files from these folders; Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads, Videos.
and they move from c:\users\old name\ to c:\users\new name

under the new profile, the first time you start your browser, and email software (things like that), it’ll be like it’s a β€˜new’ PC and if you are keen, all that old info will be in c:\users\old name\appdata and can be copied across also.
