I would recommend a SSD with a clean install of Windows.
To rule out a Windows problem you can try an in-place repair with the Windows installation media, download the media creation tool, run it & choose to upgrade now. If problem remains then a new drive is needed.

I think sticking with an older slow hdd would be false economy. Il get a 500gb ssd for him. Hopefully cure the issues

+1 on what’s already been stated.
I’d be doing a clean install of Windows, and since you’re doing that, might as well do it on a new SSD - two birds, one stone!

              Before you continue any further.

              You were also asked about.

Still need to know that make and model.

Kind of useless to do all this work and find out that the PSU is not up to par to run the system affectively and properly.

Did you use the version of windows that was already installed on this drive?

Yes, the slow of the HDD is part of the issue.

The best thing and really the only thing to do is get the SSD at least 500 GB and preform a clean install.

Install the drivers in the proper order.

Then replacing it would be the most advisable and installing the drivers in the proper order.

With just the new drive installed and no USB drives and or hardware attached (outside of keyboard and mouse).

Will do. Once I get a drive and stuff installed I’ll post back. What’s best driver order.

When you are finished with the Windows install, then install your drivers.

                      Reboot after installing the drivers
