Defender is all that most of us need Roger, please see my canned explanation below;

Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

If you do not download illegal software you do not need anymore than Windows Defender & Firewall when running Windows 8/8.1 or above.

phillpower2,

Thanks again.

Just to make things clear, are you saying that all I need is Windows Defender and that I don’t need anything like ccleaner or superantispyware etc. etc,
so I might as well uninstall Malwarebytes??

Back to the slowing down of startup - should I just accept it and live with it? Or is there anthing else we can do?

Roger, you seem a sensible chap - as am I so likewise you only need Windows Defender & Firewall.

CCleaner is not an AV so should not be mentioned in the same context and SAS while it can still be trusted to not foist all sorts of unwanted stuff on you it is not a first line of defence.

Post an Autoruns log for the boot (C: drive/partition and lets see if there is anything amiss there, as previously mentioned an increase of between one and ten seconds does not suggest a hardware issue which should be the primary concern.

How to;

Post an Autoruns log for us, see here

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.

2: Double-click the β€œAutoruns.exe”.

3: Click on the "Hide Signed Microsoft and Windows Entries” option.

4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.

5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop > when you click on File > Save you will then get the option to Save as type, click the drop down tab, change it to Text and then click the Save button.

6: Attach to your next reply.

That`s it but can you do it again and this time be sure to do step 3, logs are hard enough to get through as it is without having to go through Microsoft entries that 100% have to be there.

3: Click on the "Hide Signed Microsoft and Windows Entries” option.

phillpower2,

Apologies, to be honest I thought I did do step 3.

Anyway here goes again - hopefully right this time.

phillpower2,

Just to explain what I did:

Before I clicked File/Save the following boxes under options were ticked:

Hide Empty Locations.
Hide Microsoft Entries.
Hide Windows Entries.

Don’t know what else I can do?

I have tried again!!!

Not sure what is going on with it, must be the program itself

I will go through the log and then come back and edit this post, no need to reply until after that but can you meanwhile go through the log yourself and make a note of anything on the list that you don`t use or may not even know the program is on there.

Edit to add;

Do you have an Epson printer.

Do you use Wondershare.

Do you use Adobe or Java.

You have two anti malware programs installed, MBAM and Zemana.

The MBAM package includes Chameleon which as far as I recall is only contained within the full MBAM AV package.

phillpower2,

Epson Printer - always had.
Wondershare - not showing in programs - so probably not using.
Adobe Acrobat - always had
Adobe Air - always had.
Adobe Photoshop - always had.
Java - always had

I have uninstalled Mawarebytes using the link you supplied.

Do you know what it is, if not, how did it get on the computer, your PC may be infected with malware.

phillpower2,

Zemana is still installed.

I ran Defender and Zemana and both reported no problems.

phillpower2,

Apologies, forgot to mention Wondershare.
I believe it was Video editing software, which when uninstalled must have left some traces behind.

That is malware removal information and therefore off limits to discuss here, it is also not relevant to the question that was asked.

What about Zemana, do you intend keeping it and how did you come to have both MBAM and Zemana installed.

If you cant find a program called Wondershare on the computer, you can safely delete the entry in Autoruns, get rid of that + anything else you don`t want then re run Autoruns and post the new log, we need to make sure that all MBAM traces have gone.

phillpower2,

I have uninstalled Zemana.
Can’t recall why I had both Mbam and Zemana installed (probably ignorance!!)
I deleted Wondershare fro Autoruns plus a couple of other things.
I have run autoruns again and have attached (quite possibly as long as it was before)
