Very rarely PC shutdown while gaming?

Hi all. I have an issue that started to happen a few months ago all of a sudden that I cannot find the cause of it.

First my specs:

Win 10
Intel 4790k
16 gb ram
Gtx 1070
No overclocks done

So the thing is, when I’m playing any game light or heavy doesn’t matter, my PC very rarely and randomly shuts down all of a sudden. At first glance obviously I thought maybe the cpu or gpu is overheating however my temps are extremely normal and stable no matter what game I play.

I have even stress tested both the cpu and gpu for hours with benchmarks and everything works perfectly however when I play a game it can shutdown anytime. For example I can play for weeks without any issues, then bam out of nowhere shutdown. However outside of gaming it never shutdown on me on normal pc usage.

I have checked cable connections and updated drivers etc but I don’t know what I can do more. Like I said it doesn’t happen often but it’s very annoying when it happens nevertheless. Any ideas what is causing this? Can it be another component that is not related to heat? I don’t know what to do anymore.

Sorry I forgot to post it, PSU is a 750w semi modular Corsair.

Good brand of PSU but no good if anything less than Gold efficiency rated, the Bronze CX version for example is not recommended to be used for gaming builds by Corsair, what Corsair actually advise below;

CX Series Modular power supply units are an excellent choice for basic system builds and desktop PC computer upgrades, offering high reliability, low noise, and the flexibility of modular cabling.

Things we can see in Speccy and in the order that they are listed;

CPU

Supports 1333 and 1600MHz RAM, specs here

The RAM is being overclocked.

There looks to be GPU drivers missing.

You will not see anything like this recommended on any reputable forum,

Once Windows has been installed, you install the necessary drivers for the MB and other hardware and then leave well alone, drivers should not be allowed to auto update and you should never update any driver/s unless the new drivers are intended to resolve a specific issue that you are having, installing new drivers unnecessarily can actually cause you the very issues that any new drivers are intended to resolve and uninstalling the new drivers may not resolve the problem/s that installing the new drivers has caused.

Depending on priority it can take many months before the driver provider releases any fix and depending on the age of the hardware or software concerned they sometimes do not even bother or may have already announced an end of support.

The above is for information purposes and we will provide you with some remedial steps once you have got back to us regarding the additional PSU info.

What is the actual model of Corsair PSU that you have and how old is it.

I’m not at home atm, but I will give you the specific psu model when I go home.

However for your information I have built this PC back in ca 2014 and has been gaming since that time both in Win 7 and 10 without issues. Never changed any components except for a GPU upgrade two years ago, and never overclocked anything.

I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed so I really don’t understand why I’m missing some GPU drivers?
Driver booster is a program I used to update my network drivers but nothing else really.

Can this program cause something in the background or something maybe?

What can[ICODE]t speak can[/ICODE]t lie and Speccy says that your RAM is being overclocked;

16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 932MHz (10-11-10-30) 2 Xs 932MHz = 1864MHz.

Speccy only lists one Nvidea entry when you usually see more, GeForce Experience being just one of them that comes to mind.

It has been explained above why you should not needlessly update drivers but I will add the following, if you are unfortunate enough to be having problems that require drivers to be updated there are two golden rules, always check the manufacturers support page first and second follow any guidance that they offer as to where you should obtain drivers should you need them, MSI for example offer the info here for your GPU which when you enter your card details sends you direct to Nvidea.

Programs such as Driver Booster and Windows will both automatically update drivers on you without you knowing if you are not careful and that is why other than Windows itself and your AV protection nothing should be allowed to update without your permission.

The PSU is the most common cause of the type of problem that you mention, software crashes but without powering down the computer whereas PSUs can overheat internally and good brands like Corsair will often have an internal thermal sensor that when triggered will shut down the PSU to stop if from going bang.

Hello again, sorry for the mixup I messed up the name of the PSU because I had another build before and that one had the Corsair PSU not my current build. Anyway the PSU I have installed since day one on this rig is a Cooler Master V750 Semi-modular version. It is supposed to be 80 gold certified as far as I know.

Not a great brand of PSU but that model was ok, it is out of warranty though and depending on how much use it has had etc it could just be showing it`s age, the PSU btw has an internal shutdown trigger of 40°C.

Have you checked that all of the modular cables are nice and secure.

Unfortunately there is no safe way of us proving or disproving that the PSU is shutting down because it is overheating and all we can do is put the system underload and you check the heat being expelled from the exhaust vents on the PSU by placing the back of your hand a couple of inches away from the vents to see how hot the expelled air is.

Yeah I’ve checked all the cables etc. Yeah it has been good amount of years however what I don’t understand about my current issue is that, I can let’s say play all day long without any problems. Then the next day I want to play a game (just an indie game for example) just for 30 minutes or something after turning on my PC then randomly all of a sudden PC can shutdown.

And then I check temps everywhere and everything is normal. However like you said maybe inside the PSU is the source of the problem with a capacitor going bad perhaps. The interesting thing is the issue is inconsistent and I cannot replicate sudden shutdown it to make sure the problem is the PSU itself. Anyway I will check the exxhaust vent like you said. Run something like Furmark to put the PC under load when you are ready to check the exhaust vent temps.

In addition to the above, it may be worthwhile running MTB as it will keep a record of what is running when the computer has suddenly shut down;

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.

Please do not double or multiple post, I get upwards of 200 notifications some days so can do without receiving any that are not necessary, thanks.

The MTB tool was only meant to be run if the computer shut down while you were doing the testing, if it does it will most likely produce the same error as above which points towards a thermal or electrical issue.
