Why Constant CPU activity

My computer’s CPU with Windows 10 is constantly running. It is hard to interrupt. It may take up to 30 seconds or longer to recognize new mouse clicks, select items from menus, etc. The modem shows constant activity. I have run Malewarebyte and McAfee scans which finds an occasional PUP error. I have tried to restore but no restore points exists early enough. It’s almost like something has taken over the computer. Larry

Are you running 2004 update + Malwarebytes?
There’s an incompatibility between the two, their workaround is to either disable ransomware protection or download the Beta version.

I’m not sure what you mean about “running 2004 update”? Update to what? I also tried just now to run Malwarebyte to determine it’s version and it won’t open. Have tried half dozen times.

Microsoft have released the 2004 Windows upgrade, it’s this I’m referring to.
Try safe mode: press & hold shift while clicking restart, Continue holding shift until the recovery options are shown, then choose troubleshoot>Startup Options, once in safe mode try opening MB again or use the taskbar icon to turn off ransomeware protection.
Also Start>Run & enter winver to determine whether you have 2004 or 1909 installed.

I have 1909 installed. Ran RogueKiller and found some registry problems. Eliminated those. CPU is not quite as active. are there other things that I could do? Thanks for your help.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:
