Yet another Black Screen With Cursor thread :-(

Hey, guys. Iโ€™m getting that dreaded black screen with cursor before/after logon. Iโ€™ve scoured many online forums, including the Microsoft one, but none of the solutions found by people experiencing similar issues worked for me.

Here are some of the symptoms of the problem (1-3) and things attempted in the recovery environment (4-5):
[ol]
[li]Mouse cursor only shows when moved/clicked.[/li][li]Same thing even in Safe Mode[/li][li]No response whatsoever to any keyboard commands (e.g. Win+R, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, et.c)[/li][li]Setup Repair: failed[/li][li]System Restore: failed[/li][li]Uninstall latest feature update: failed[/li][li]Uninstall latest quality update: succeeded but did nothing[/li][li]Restore health using chdsk: succeeded but did nothing[/li][/ol]
As you can see, Iโ€™ve tried quite a few things. I wish a clean install were an option, but I canโ€™t afford to wipe out my data.
There is zero doubt that this was brought about by the latest of Microsoftโ€™s forced updates, which have broken things for me in the past, but never this substantially.

Please S.O.S.

You could try using a live version of Linux to back up your data then do a clean install.

This is why we always suggest doing backups when the system is in running condition and not when something happens.
