No display issues

Hi all, so had to update windows 10 the other day, performed the update, the pc restarted and my monitor went to standby mode (due to no signal). I let it have an hour or so. It wouldn’t come on. I powered the system down, then switched it back on, the monitor worked again. I logged in to windows and found the update failed. I tried the update again a few times and the same thing happens, the last time I tried it, no matter what I try I am unable to get any signal to my monitor. I will list below everything I have checked and tried.

1. Checked all cables including trying them on different devices and screens, they work fine.
2. the monitor works fine when plugged into my PS4.
3. Tried a different monitor on the pc, all I get is a no signal message.

4.Removed my GPU and ram and reinserted to ensure nothing is loose.

1. removed cmos battery.
2. tried my gpu in another pc (works fine)

I have literally tried everything I can think of and nothing makes any difference whatsoever.
any suggestions ?

Do the post screens appear on the screen?

Did you make sure that the monitor is plugged in to the display card and not the motherboard?

Does the system have onboard display if so remove the display card and connect to the onboard display and see if you get anything?

When you reinserted the display card did you reconnect (if there was one) the power to it?

Yeah the monitor is plugged in to the display card, it was all fine till I tried updating windows. I can’t plug it into the onboard because the onboard one doesn’t have the correct port.
I am talking to a Microsoft tech and may have found what the issue is but I have no idea how to resolve it.
He said that during the windows update it may have updated my video driver, so it sounds like the update has messed up my gpu drivers. He just keeps telling me to roll them back. He doesn’t seem to understand that I have absolutely no display so I can’t see anything in order to do that.

See if you can access Safe Mode? This will load just basic drives for everything and maybe this way you can roll back the display drivers.

Still gives no signal to my monitor. The Microsoft tech has advised me to take it to a service centre. Useful guys they are. The update has done something cause it was fine till I updated.

Do you have the Windows 10 install media?
If so we should be able to Uninstall Updates from there
Boot the the Install media
On the second screen select Repair
Then select Advance Options
Then Uninstall Updates.

If that does not work then go to the same place and try a System Restore

I am going to get the install media on usb and try to source a monitor that I can use with the onboard gpu. I’m gonna switch to another operating system. A windows tech has just admitted there is known issues with the latest windows update causing conflicts

Below is my canned info for accessing the Window RE, it is basically the same as at the link that Russ provided, if these are the exact same steps as what you tried can you tell us the exact outcome, were you in fact able to get into the RE or did you get the “No Signal” message throughout, this is important as getting a “No Signal” message throughout would suggest a hardware issue.

See if you are able to force the computer to start in the Windows Recovery Environment (RE) by starting up and shutting down the computer two or three times using the case power button, please note that you need to shut down the computer after the MBs splash screen and just before Windows attempts to load, if successful you should then continue to the Troubleshooting options and then hopefully be able to use a system restore point or Safe Mode etc.

I have switched it off and on the 3 times but to be honest it’s a guess if I am doing it at the right time as I can’t see anything. To be honest I have never seen anything quite like this. If I unplug the hdmi cable from the pc, whether the pc is on or off the monitor wakes up to search for a source, the minute it is plugged into the pc the monitor goes to standby.

If you are unsure as to what the question means, when you press the power on button do you at any time see anything on the display, you have not post any hardware information so I will need to use an example, if your MB was lets say ASUS you would normally upon powering up see what is called the ASUS splash screen and something along the lines of press F1 to enter Set Up, do you get such a screen at all on powering up.

You should not connect or disconnect the monitor while the computer is connected to the wall socket or powered up, even the smallest amount of charge can take out one or more of your components.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help any and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks.

Hi no the post screen doesn’t show up. If the pc is connected to the monitor, the monitor goes into standby, if I manually switch the monitor back on it cycles through the sources then goes back into standby as it finds no source

Are you comfortable with working inside of a computer, if yes, can you provide the following for us, more canned info;

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable folk to better assist you.

CPU : intel celeron 1037U 1.8ghz
MB : intel (ECS) NM70-M
RAM : Kingston hyper fury 1X 4gb and 1x8gb
Video card : AMD Radeon HD 8780
PSU :Corsair CX600

Couple of questions for you;

What port does your monitor have, all the specs I get for your GPU say it has DVI and HDMI and your MB has DVI and HDMI.

Does your GPU require any supplemental power dongle/s from the PSU.

Have you tried booting with only one stick of RAM at a time in the MB, slot nearest the CPU first then the second slot, test repeated with both sticks.

My monitor has dvi and hdmi, my MB only has dvi and serial ports, no onboard hdmi port. I use my video card.

yes my gpu does have power dongles from the psu, I have unplugged these to ensure no dust is inside.

yes I tried removing the RAM and using only one stick at a time as I have had that issue on a system in the past.
