I realised that the file type for DAT files in my PC has been changed into a weird symbol (symbol below). I cannot find out why nor change it back into the correct DAT file type. If anyone knows how to change it back, please help. thanks!
well, youβre in the right area to change it back but the big question is what to change it to?
the .DAT file extension is pretty broad, Iβve seen it used in AVG email certification, picture/video software, and just plain data files in general.
in other words, it has no one-off association like say, .DOC or .JPG files.
.DATs are arbitrary, non-program specific data files.
your best bet would be to open it with Notepad, yes most of it will look like crap but hopefully the first bit will give something away as to where the file came from.

and you will see how to change all file associations back to default, which may be a bit drastic. OR if you scroll down the page you will see there are registry fixes for individual file extensions. Select the DAT extension and download the reg entry for that file. Double click the file to run and it will restore the original default association. Reboot and it should be good to go?
