PC wont start.

I conducted a windows 10 refresh on my Lenovo (all in one) desktop PC and during the process it froze on the reload screen for more than 8 hours. I conducted a warm reboot, now it only goes to the Lenovo splash screen and wont go into Windows. It wont boot into safe mode. I tried a boot CD and boot USB, after changing the boot order in bios, but nothing worked.

I brought it into Geek Squad and three days later they told me it was a motherboard issue and recommended me to get a new PC because it would be too expensive to replace.

Any thoughts?

obviously I can’t prove they are wrong in their diagnosis, and bad coincidences like this do happen but…

so you have tried reloading Windows again, if so, what messages do you get?
if the motherboard is dead you won’t be able to do anything.
how old is it?

Bruce. When reloading windows using both USB and disk drive it just goes to the splash screen with the fancy ‘Lenovo’ logo, no error messages are observed. I can hear the disc reader spinning the disc. I also have tried using a Linux Lite install disc and the disc reader will spin but will do nothing. I believe it is a 2014 or 2015 model. Would BIOS work if the motherboard is bad?

Is the present hard drive detected in the BIOS (see info below).

Does the computer have UEFI BIOS.

Would try Puppy Linux on USB, see info here

How is the HDD identified in the BIOS, a Seagate HDD for example will be listed something like ST1000DM004 and a Western Digital along the lines of WD10JPLX other brands will have similar identification codes, only when such an ID code is present is a HDD actually detected and an entry simply listed as SATA HDD means that the BIOS will and has looked for a HDD in that particular boot sequence but no HDD was detected.

Would BIOS work if the motherboard is bad?

It depends on what the fault is and while not common it is possible, when you access the BIOS you do so before the power on self test (POST) has been carried out and one such thing that could cause POST to fail is the BIOS not finding an OS to load because the SATA port/s are either bad or have been disabled somehow.

I am not sure if my BIOS is UEFI BIOS or not. How do you tell?

what’s your Lenovo’s age - UEFI as been all but standard for around 3-5 years now.

When accessing BIOS it says ‘BIOS Date: 10/16/2014’ so I would assume I have BIOS.

Your HDD is detected by the BIOS as it is clearly identified as being a 1TB Seagate device.

The reason why it was asked if you had legacy or UEFI BIOS was because with UEFI BIOS you often need to disable secure boot before you are able to boot from a USB device.

Can you let us know the following;

The full model name or number of the Lenovo.

What are your boot options in the BIOS.

I noticed my DVDRAM was listed last, so I moved it above the HDD and now my boot sequence looks like this:

The change made no difference with my PCs startup, but added the network for some reason.

Has UEFI BIOS + if not deleted it should still have the Lenovo system rescue partition on it.

Boot options aside for the moment, have you tried continually tapping the F2 key when you restart the computer, if yes, what happened, if no, give it a try to see if you are able to get to the OneKey Recovery option then get back to us.
