Computer randomly freezes

Hello everyone,

I recently saved up some money and bought a computer that I can use for all of my gaming needs. It arrived around 3 weeks ago and I have been loving it. The only problem that I’ve been having is that it will randomly freeze for about 5 seconds. This usually happens when I am playing games (such as world of Warcraft and smite) and is obviously terrible if it happens at a bad time. The most this has happened in one day (probably an 8 hour gaming session) is about three times, so it is not happening constantly. After the freeze, it goes right back to normal. Sometimes the audio cuts out, and sometimes the audio stays, but it seems like it usually cuts out. I will post a link to the computer that I bought, since I am not tech savvy enough to tell you exactly what it has.

Sorry to hear that your rather expensive computer is not doing what you wish of it

I must first of all mention that because the computer is new it is still under warranty and you are therefore limited with what you can do so as not to void your warranty.

Couple of things that I noticed, the computer PSU is listed as being a 600W, no brand or anything else that would give us an idea as to how good or bad of quality it may be, it is also below the required 650W that the RTX 2080 video card requires, you can confirm this for yourself here

Second thing that I noted in your OP is that both games you mention are online games, a poor internet service could also cause what you describe.

Can you open the side of the case, make a note of the brand and model name or number of the PSU and post them here when you next reply.

Check your FPS with Valley free, this will give you a better idea of how the GPU is working when not gaming online.

I was not aware that the PSU was not sufficient for this GPU. I also was not aware that it could cause freezing. I opened the side and it says it is a “Thermaltake Smart 600W”.
Also, I do not believe that it is my internet connection because I do not usually have any problems with it, considering it is wired, and I also do not have connection problems on my consoles.

If you look at the information sticker on the PSU beneath the +12V info you will see that the PSU produces a claimed 42 amps on the +12V which is ok but only a maximum power output of 504W which is bad when your card requires a 650W PSU, this is something that you really need to take up with the merchant that sold you the computer, use the Nvidea specifications as proof that the PSU is underpowered and don`t be fobbed off by them saying that card manufacturers always overstate the power requirements for their cards.

Yes, I did run valley and it ran very smoothly on Max settings. I did not have any freezing at all yesterday while I was playing my games either. It is a very uncommon occurrence, but it seems to be worse on some days.

You should contact them and tell them the problems that you are having + what you have found out about the power requirements for the video card and the specifications of the PSU that the computer shipped with, check the Game Debate links here and you will see that all brands require a 650W PSU.

Could still be your internet service but the problem of using an under powered PSU is that it can work for a while, become unstable and then at some point fail, much better to take this up with who you purchased the computer while it is under warranty.
