    Black screen after boot

    Hello PCHF Community,

Just tonight I was having a bit of lazy gaming session when suddenly my PC crashed. The screen froze and all that was coming through the speakers was static - kind of like the old dial up tone but worse (if that’s possible).

Anyway, I powered the PC down (held power button down for 5+ sec) and rebooted the PC.

After the Asus loading screen prompting for F2 or DEL for BIOS, the screen simply remained black and nothing happened. Moving the mouse around reveals the cursor but if I leave it it disappears again. Trying again shows the cursor with the loading circle next to it but then it fades away again.

I’ve tried a few things to remedy this:
    • Booting with fast mode DISABLED
    • Booting with no USB devices plugged in
    • Turning the RAM speed down in the UEFI (as it was overclocked)

Nothing has changed the behavior so now I’m seeking help. It seems like Windows 10 is booting because the cursor is there but the login screen won’t appear so I’m not sure what exactly has happened and what I can do to fix it.

If any more information is required to troubleshoot the situation, I’m happy to provide it.

Thanks all in advanced with any help.

    Regards,

Can you boot into safe mode with networking?
If so turn off β€˜allow microsoft to use my sign in information to set up this pc after a restart or update’. This may not be the exact message.
If you have a boot USB drive (windows installation media) you can start from that & run startup repair.

      Hi Bastet

Couldn’t boot in safe mode with networking.

Had to disable all boot devices in the UEFI, plug in boot drive and restart PC in order to see the USB as a bootable option.

From there I could reinstall Windows.

      Appreciate the help

      :]

Hi static_rage. Try booting to your Windows installation media and boot to the Advanced Recovery Options window and select the Command Prompt option.

When the Command Prompt window opens type the following commands, exactly as written below, in the order in which they are presented, and press enter after entering each command:

        [ul]
        [li]Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup [/li][li]ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old[/li][li]Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd [/li][li]BootRec.exe /fixmbr[/li][li]BootRec.exe /fixboot[/li][li]sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows [/li][li]chkdsk C: /r [/li][li]exit[/li][/ul]

If you receive any warnings or notifications asking you are you sure, press Y to confirm.

After exiting the Command Prompt window, reboot the computer and see if Windows works successfully.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions, thanks.
