Microsoft Basic Display Adapter has a driver problem

Recently got a new CPU. I’ve been getting this Device performance & health thing saying that Microsoft Basic Display Adapter has a driver problem since then.

I ran the troubleshooter in hopes to fix it and get rid of the [!] icon but troubleshooter says it can’t find the problem. After googling some stuff, I tried some of the fixes I found like updating Microsoft Basic Display Adapter manually in the Device Manager (it says the best drivers are already installed) and also updating 1050 ti’s driver the same way. The [!] is still there. When I dismiss the recommendation, it goes away for that session, but it comes back when I restart.

What could be happening? Is this nothing big and I can just ignore the [!] or something’s up? Anything I could do? The [!] is troubling me lol

First thing’s first, let’s get some more information about your machine

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:


List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

Also, something additional I did after I posted the thread in attempts to fix it: Installed GeForce Experience and updated 1050ti’s driver through that. Apparently device manager didn’t actually update the driver when it said it did. Anyway, the problem persists.

Noticed that you are running Windows 10 Enterprise which may have something to do with it, can I ask how you come to be running this particular version of Windows, reason that I ask is because it is intended for use by large corporations and education facilities who typically have system administrators in charge of looking after the upkeep of the software, employees and students for example do not have the required permissions to go changing things.

Hello! I was actually about to post about an OS-related problem days ago but I thought I’d get this one sorted first.

I used to have my computers built by another person who set up everything including the peripherals and the OS. The new CPU I got was the first I got to “build” myself and I chose to use the hard drives I got from my older CPUs. Ryzen 3, as I have read, is Windows 10 only so I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 and then here we are.

I’m guessing that my computer guy used his corporation’s license to activate my Windows? Or pirated Windows 8.1 Enterprise on my CPU? I found out about it when I was looking at the activation of my upgraded Windows 10.. Didn’t think much about involvement of 8.1’s authenticity until it was brought up there.

So would you say a fresh install of Windows Pro + new license would fix this?

We cannot say for certain whether or not a clean install using a legitimately obtained OS would resolve the driver problem but there is a good chance that it will, unfortunately while you have an illegally obtained version of Windows installed on the computer no assistance can be offered here, to continue helping would be against the PCHF Terms and rules and land us in trouble.

You can download a legitimate Windows 10 ISO for free direct from Microsoft, everything that you need to know here if you still have the same driver problem with the legit OS installed you can either come back here or in fact post on the Microsoft forums, something that you cannot do atm, shop around for the best prices for a Windows product key before you clean install,

Just a fyi, CPU = Central Processing Unit or in this instance a Ryzen 3, computers themselves are commonly referred to as desktop, notebook or netbook etc, using the correct terminology is important as it avoids confusion.

I understand. I wonder if you could answer a question, related to installing the legit OS. I have two SATA drives on my pc right now. One has Windows 7 and another is the Windows 10. I’m planning on doing the clean install of legit Windows 10 on the one with Windows 7 while the faked Windows 10 holds my files as backup. Once I’m set up with the legit Windows 10, I’ll be formatting the drive with the faked Windows 10 and will just be used for extra storage or something. So there will be a point in time where two drives with the same OS is on the same machine. Will that work fine or do I need to setup something other than boot priority in bios? I can’t exactly disconnect the drives physically because whenever I touch anything inside a CPU, thing won’t turn on again.

If you aren’t allowed to answer this, I understand! Thanks for the responses so far anyway!

I’m planning on doing the clean install of legit Windows 10 on the one with Windows 7

As long as there is plenty of free storage space on the drive setting up a dual boot is relatively straight forward, having Windows 7 on the drive already is a bonus as the older OS has to be installed first, we need a screenshot of Disk Manager of the Windows 7 machine

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
2. Click on the System and Security link.
   Note: If you’re viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won’t see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.
3. In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.
4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.
5. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.
   After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.
   Note: If you don’t see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start…all programs…accessories…paint…left click in the white area …press CTRL + V…click on file…click on save…save it to your desktop…name it something related to the screen your capturing… BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG …otherwise it may be to big to upload… then after typing in any response you have… click on Attach files…desktop…find the screenshot..select it.click on Post Reply like you normally would.

May I ask why this is so? Just curious! Because I can’t even choose to boot to it from bios. I’m not sure I can use the license of it either because the same guy who set up Win 8.1 set it up.

Disk 1 is the one with Windows 7.

There is no boot partition on Disk 1 which means that if you disconnected Disk 0 the computer will not boot up.

The reason why the older OS is best installed first is better explained here slightly different as the two OSs are Vista and Windows 7 whereas you want to run 7 and 10.

The above asides meme2, we can do no more here now until you have a legitimate version of Windows 10 on the computer.
