16 gb ram in computer, only 7,98 useable

    hi,

my pc suddenly freezes every day, so i did try to find the problem.
it seems like my memory is filling up way too fast, so i got a memory clearer. now i saw that i only have 7,98 gb of my 16 gb ram available.

when i remove 1 ram stick i will have 8 gb, when i use both ( 2x 2x4gb) i have 7,98 (less). that doesnt make any sense for me.

i m using windows 10. is there a way to solve my problem?

Hi @Ler and welcome to PCHF

Let’s get some more information about your machine before we start

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    List Installed Programs
    List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Please post the log in your next reply

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

Speccy will open and after a short wait will display a summary of your system specs.
    [ol]
[li]Click on the file menu.[/li][li]Then click Publish snapshot.[/li][/ol]

A dialogue box will ask you to confirm, select yes.

    Another dialogue box will open
    [ol]
    [li]Click Copy to Clipboard.[/li][li]Then click Close.[/li][/ol]

Now that your link has been copied please paste it into your next post. It should look something like the example below

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

it looks like i solved the problem myself

first i did try to find out if some of my hardware was damaged or broken. switched the rams, started pc with only 1 each, everything was fine, but the problem was still there.

then i downloaded 3 different anti malware/virus programs and let them take actions. it found several things, i guess this is normal because they want to sell their product, but it also fixed my problem

now it shows 16 gb of ram when i go in the control panel / system instead of 7,98.

i m not sure how this could happen. was there a harmful program that deactivates or blocks half my ram? what is the purpose of this?

i m happy that everything is fine now and the problem seems solved.

good job on the fix Ler.
what were the 3 programs you ran?
and what were the β€˜problems’ they found? (they should still have their scan logs in the program itself you can look through)
this sort of info could be helpful to know when others search the Forum with similar issues.

          Malwarebytes, Avast, Avira.

avira did find nothing. i cant see how i can check the reports from my previous scans at avast.
          malwarebytes: ID: 8443, 4x 57, 135x 1949. (141 in total)

if you need more info, let me know

            that’s good info.
I’m guessing MBAM was your saving grace this time.

today i restarted my pc, opened a couple of browsers and pc freezes again.

pc was running for about 1 minute. i guess this problem is not related to the ram. i have googled for some solutions already, but nothing seems to work. do you guys have any tips for me that i could test?

based on your success with malware scans, there still may be lurking gremlins.
time for this to be moved into the malware forum for expert advice.

I’m sure the powers-that-be will advise further soon. jmarket @gus

Hello Ler, sorry for the delay.

We will need a log from AdwCleaner for further information.

Please download a copy of AdwCleaner from HERE, it is important to download it to your desktop.

Once downloaded to the desktop AdwCleaner will create an icon

Should you receive any security warnings or your User Account Control warning appears whilst you are using this application you can safely allow AdwCleaner to continue.

Before running AdwCleaner please ensure all other programs and browsers are closed, then double left click the icon to open it.

AdwCleaner will open, click the scan button to start searching.

The scan may take some time to complete, and when it has any malware found will be automatically selected for quarantining. Click the β€œClean” button.

After a few seconds a message should tell you your computer will now reboot. Allow the reboot.

When the computer restarts a log file will be displayed, but if its closed for any reason before copying the contents, you will find a copy of the file if you navigate to C:\AdwCleaner[C#].txt (The C denotes the Cleaning log)

Please Copy and Paste the contents of the log file with your next reply.

We need a log from Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) to examine your system.

Please download the FRST 32 bit or FRST 64bit version to suit your operating system. It is important FRST is downloaded to your desktop.

If you are unsure if your operating system is 32 or 64 Bit please go HERE.

Once downloaded right click the FRST desktop icon and select β€œRun as administrator” from the menu"

If you receive any security warnings, or the User Account Control warning opens at any time whilst using FRST you can safely allow FRST to proceed.
Frst will open with two dialogue boxes, accept the disclaimer.

                  [ol]
[li]Accept the default whitelist options,[/li][li]If the additions.txt options box is not checked please select it.[/li][li]Then select β€œScan”[/li][/ol]

Frst will take a few minutes to scan your computer, and when finished will produce two log files on your desktop, FRST.txt, and Addition.txt. They will display immediately on the desktop, but can be reopened later as a notepad file.

Please COPY and PASTE these two logs along with the Adwcleaner log in your next post.
