Just a standard UK mains. It was plugged in all day today.
At work and at home? Turned on or off?
Official ASUS battery.

Good some systems have issues if the battery is after market or nor the proper one. Have you tried replacing the charger? Which fixed my charging issue.
EDIT: Is the battery, charger getting warm or hot to the touch when charging?

Yeah I wanted to make sure I got an official one just to eliminate the possibility of it being a dodgy 3rd party one.
Well bizarrely my housemate has the same charger, so I borrowed his and that made no differenceโฆ I wish it was that simple

One that came with the system. If after market some come with chips that talk to the system and if things do not correlate then the system may not charge.

Yeah, his came with his ASUS laptop. His laptop is more recent than mine, but both the chargers look identical.
So far Iโve tried uninstalling/re-installing the Microsoft ACPI items under device manager AND buying a new batteryโฆ but no luck.
You mention uninstalling/re-installing the Microsoft ACPI items in Device Manager, have you tried removing the battery when the computer has booted up, uninstall the drivers, restart the notebook, reinstall the drivers and then reinsert the battery while the computer is booted into Windows.

Bizarrely however, I took my laptop to work today and have plugged it in multiple times and Iโve just checked my battery and Iโm at 78% now - Iโve been stuck on 48% since I started this thread.
Never thought to ask what % was showing, if you disconnect the AC adapter and use the notebook does the % reading drop at all.

What explanation could there be for the sporadic charging?
A faulty charging circuit on the notebook and/or the DC jack port, if there is a pin in the centre of the DC jack port on the notebook check that it is not bent or loose.

No, the battery isnโt removable unless I actually unscrew it from the motherboardโฆ should I try that?

Yeah, drops after a few minutes of use.

Ah, man, I was kind of hoping for a less expensive-sounding problem Iโve had a look down the charging port and the pin seems central, so I suppose that only leaves the charging circuitโฆ

If there is nothing holding the battery in place without inserting the screws then I would not suggest you tried the above.
If the battery charge % drops when the AC adapter is not connected at all then I would suggest letting the battery run right down until you either get the low battery charge message or the notebook shuts down due to the battery being out of charge, after one or the other has happened, hook up the AC adapter and see if the battery will fully charge.

Too early to be certain on this and you may need to have it confirmed by a local tech store, the fact that the battery actually charged up to 78% at work suggests that updating the BIOS will not fix this.
