New battery plugged in not charging

I bought a new battery for my HP Compaq Presario CQ57 because the battery needed replacing. I plugged it in and hovered over the battery icon and it says: Plugged in, not charging. I have Windows 10 OS with anniversary update. Microsoft Composite Battery is also not listed in Device Manager. I checked for a BIOS update for the laptop and there was one; however, its for Windows 7. This update has to do with my problem about the battery not charging. Should I install the BIOS update even thought the laptop now has Windows 10. It was bought Windows 7 64-bit in 2012. I bought a 9 cell battery on Amazon. It’s not an HP, but it is compatible with the laptop. Can you please help me fix this problem. I have tried uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery and rebooting. I have also tried disabling it and the Microsoft AC Adapter and that still didn’t help. I also tried the steps to rermove battery, reboot, plug in ac adatper, etc. I saw these on the internet. I am at a loss. Please help.

With some manufactures’ you can only use their parts in them. I have owned two HP’s that are like this.

This could also be the fact that it may be a bad battery and the same replacement will take care of that.

Can the system handle the 9 Cell battery I have a Gateway that can only use the 6 Cell.

The website said that this battery is compatible with my laptop. The battery is currently at 86% but it doesn’t seem to go any higher and is been that way at least 2 hours. Yesterday It was at 40%. Also shouldn’t the BIOS show what OS is onstalled, which is Windows 10. It shows ‘Factory istalled OS Windows 7’. Does that mean the laptop needs a BIOS update?
Also, what do the lights on back of battery mean?

Most new batteries you have to charge for a long time at the start it normally says on instructions some may be 5 hours. Does the lights show the charge some have a button so you can test out of laptop

There is a button on the back that makes the lights light up, but it doesn’t say anything and I didn’t get any instructions. I contacted the seller and he also gave me some things to try and if those didn’t work, that he would let me return it. One of them being update the BIOS. But I wanted to find out from PC Help if that was a good idea. When is a BIOS update necessary? By the way, the battery is still at 86% and the adapter is not connected. Is that a false reading?

I found the BIOS update on the HP website. I put in the product ID of the laptop and chose windows 7 64bit as the OS, even though windows 10 is installed, and it gave a bunch of updates including the BIOS.

I chose windows 64 bit and all the updates are for windows 7. How do I get windows 10 updates? I press the button and it shows 1 light. It is at 6% now. The battery depleted earlier so I did the battery reboot and it went to 6%.

From the limited information you have supplied this laptop may, or may not support Windows 10. Can you supply the full model number? It would not be recommended to install a Windows 7 driver to use with Windows 10.

Windows 7 was the last O/S supported according to HP’s site. You could try going back to Windows 7, updating the BIOS with the correct driver, and if that cures your issue try updating to 10 again.
