Can't type anything in search box

I canโ€™t type anything in the search box (Cortana), start menu works normally otherwise.
In services.msc windows search is set to start automatically although when I look in running processโ€™s there is no search or cortana running.
The system is running Win10Pro which was updated from Win7 under the free upgrade offer. I donโ€™t want to do reset because all my installed apps/programs are working fine.

    Can anyone offer assistance please?

    Heya pcpaul

Iโ€™ve had this issue myself. I find a restart fixes it and it works normally again. Have you tried restating and see if the issue persists?

Itโ€™s not been working for months, in the past few days Iโ€™ve tried sfc and dism โ€œfixesโ€ I found on google but neither work.
Some fixes suggest using task manager and ending Cortana and/or search and restarting but they never appear in task manager

You could try an in-place repair which will not delete files or programs.
            Follow Brinkโ€™s tutorial here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...e-upgrade.html

I donโ€™t want to risk an in-place repair because my programs, settings etc are exactly how I want them.
I had hoped getting Cortana/search to work would be easier than it seems to be.
Basically Iโ€™d rather live without search than screw my system up

Since it looks like no one can fix the problem easily you can take it down or mark it solved

You can use the Everything Search Engine.

                          From Microsoft.
If any of these functions like Start Menu, Settings, Search, Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Action Center and other Windows components are not responding, follow these below methods and check if it helps:
                          Method 1:

                          [ul]
[li]Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select Command prompt (admin).[/li]

[li]Enter the below commands one by one and hit Enter key.[/li]
                          PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

                          [/ul]
                          [ul]
[li]It will open the PowerShell window.[/li]

[li]Now enter the below command and hit Enter key.[/li]
                          Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$.InstallLocation -like โ€œSystemAppsโ€} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

                          [/ul]
If the issue still persist, follow the below method.

                          Method 2:

                          [ul]
                          [li]Open the Task manager. Hereโ€™s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.[/li][li]Click File > Run New Task[/li][li]Make sure you have a check mark beside โ€œCreate this task with administrative privilegesโ€[/li][li]Type Powershell[/li][li]Type the following in the Powershell prompt:[/li]$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + โ€˜\AppxManifest.xmlโ€™ ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest
                          [/ul]
                          [ul]
[li]Close the Powershell window[/li][li]Reboot the computer and check if it helps.[/li][/ul]
