Lenova laptop lost all applications files and folders

Hello, My girlfriend has a fairly new Lenova laptop with windows 10 and the last time she turned it on, yesterday, it was as if it had been reformatted. I have not tried to system restore yet she is bringing it by on Saturday I’m wondering if anyone has heard of this situation and will system restore work? Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you

    Hello

Has she done any Win 10 updates? Also is this laptop still under warranty?

I’m not sure of either I’ve been maintaining it for her and it was working fine the last time I had it. Unless windows did an auto update. She wouldn’t have tried to update it.

Hi mnisia. Have you looked in the appropriate areas like Documents, Pictures, Favorites, etc. to see if the data is still present on the machine?

Have all the settings like personalization settings and user account information been reset as well?

I will have the computer tomorrow, Saturday, and I will be looking at your suggestions as I try to unravel this mystery. Do you think a system restore to an earlier date would be a good idea ? Or should I check the setting you mentioned first?

If the laptop has been updated recently to the anniversary update then check the Windows.old folder as they may be under there.
I’ve read on other forums of the same happening but it’s been noticed that the respective OPs’ HD space hasn’t increased so the files, folders & apps are still there.

If the files (documents pictures so on so forth) will strongly suggest to back them up to a external drive.

In fact she made she a mistake and told windows to reformat to original state… ouch. this takes it back to windows 8 and loss of all files etc. To bring it back to windows 10 is the effort now. After downloading and attempting to intall all the windows updates to bring it to 8.1 which took about 4 hrs. I now get an error msg. "Failure to Configures windows updates reverting changes do not turn off your computer. joy.. I’ve been waitng a long time for this to happen it doesn’t loo good. Any ideas?

Might be a good time for a reminder on the importance of disc images
