Lost password after Win 10 upgrade

I can’t find the rules so sorry if this isn’t allowed:
My friend has a small business, a couple of years ago he bought a Windows 8 computer at auction which never needed a password to logon. After recently getting the Win 10 update he was asked for a password at logon, now he can’t use it at all because even trying to revert the OS requires a password.
I know I could wipe the drive and re-install from his windows8 recovery disc but is there any other way?
