Win 10 upgrade gone wrong

My son was trying to upgrade his girl friends laptop and everything looked ok until it was time to reboot and now the laptop is stuck at restarting pc. Any suggestions? He has flushed the DNS cache and stopped the update service and still no joy..

When you reboot it, does it attempt to load the OS at all? Like when you do a hard reset, does it try to boot into Windows 10? The reason I ask is because sometimes a hard reset is all it takes to clear the boot loop.

No. The spec’s are… hp probook 4540s, i3, 4gb, win 7 pro

OK. What happens when you guys do a hard reset? Does it boot past POST, load the Windows 10 splash screen, then go immediately to “Restarting PC…”, or does it try to finish the installer?

I know that a lot of people are experiencing issues with this. Are you able to boot into Safe Mode and see if you’re able to at least boot into the desktop?

Ok they are running out of time getting off work and his girl friend doesn’t want to do a hard reset. A bit of a hardhead i reckon.

A Hard Reset is of the machine, not the OS itself. If turning off the laptop and back on again doesn’t fix it, try booting into Safe Mode with Networking.

Ok..i guess i will have to wait until she gets home from work..

I mean if she won’t reboot the computer manually, our diagnostics can’t really go much further ops:

As long as she does that, we can continue on with the diagnostics. I have a feeling a corrupted partition or file is to blame for this boot loop.

I have to agree a hard is the only way to go then see what happens or attempt to get into safe mode with networking.

How long has it been at the reboot screen and which one?

Besides it will reboot several times during the upgrade.

Ok we talked her into a hard reset and that was a no go,also SMWN is working but will not open win update and it doesn’t prompt win 10 upgrade..

What happen if you just let the system attempt to go into normal does it try to correct its self?

OK…we have come to the conclusion the HDD is failing,since the laptop was having issue’s prior to the upgrade..:coffee:

To bad about the HDD. If they still want to put ten on they could always do a clean install using a DVD/USB.
