is it as simple as you haven’t associated a text editor to those files?
what type of files are they; plain text, Word docs etc?

What are the extensions for the files?

Unless the file is associated to a specific program it will show a basic icon for it like that.

See if you can open one of those files in Libre Office, and if you can, then save it as a Libre Office file.

              Hello chuck,

If you’re familiar with Windows, but are a little confused on Linux, I would strongly suggest checking out Zorin OS. I’ve used it in the past and I’ve found it stable and fast. I find it great for those who are new to the Linux world but are comfortable with navigating Windows.

Zorin OS comes in different flavors, but you only need the Core version. It has everything you need and more

jmarket Zorin is a good idea i have tried it, and many distros. I will stick with Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 64 bit iam learning it ok. I do like it 100% better than Windows it seems more secure i dont use antivirus or anything like that, i dont have to to worry so much about hackers now. I watch You Tube Video,s about scammer,s it seem, s the ones from India have that accent there easy to identify. Of course theres hacker,s in United States.

Iam not real good with Linux i use it for gmail, You Tube and search. I can use the terminal pretty good and get around ok.
I get alot of tips off the net, some good but some so bad i have had to install Mint all over again. You have to start over again and takes alot time. Sorry for all the yaking just my way to communicate i cant talk at all i have had 2 strokes iam in a nursing home in Eaton, Ohio iam 63.
                  Thank,s Chuck

A couple of questions if I may

What software did you use to create those files

                    and

Did you create them on a Windows or Linux OS?
