Hi Guys,
I wanted to connect my secondary pc upstairs, to my main one . I have my main PC and router downstairs. I also have a Philips 5600 router and a Philips USB dongle. What I need to know, if you do not mind is, where do I plug the various Philips items into. Do I plug the Philips router into a socket on my primary router ?, or plug it into the secondary pc upstairs ?. Also do I need to use the Dongle. ?. Look forward to you replies.

Thank you.

We can certainly assist you with that. First we will need some more information. You mentioned that you already have a primary router, what is the make and model of it?

Does your secondary computer already support wireless?

Hi Twitch6000, The main router is from my isp and the only real information I can see is : Hub 2 VMDG 485. I presume the VM stands for Virgin Media. I do believe the other pc upstairs supports wireless. Is this information any good to you.

I do believe the other pc upstairs supports wireless. Is this information any good to you.

if it's a laptop, almost all do already have wireless capability.
it's the opposite for a desktop however.
to confirm, on the upstairs PC, go to Start, Control Panel, change View By: to Small Icons, Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, you should see an entry that mentions 'wifi' or 'wireless'.

Goggling shows the VMDG485 is a cable modem with a wireless router. So what you are after is to get both PC's onto the same network, that way the upstairs PC can access files on the downstairs one and vice-versa (once the appropriate network permissions have been setup).
The downstairs PC must already be connected to the modem, get the upstairs one connected via that USB dongle.

Sounds good, Bruce. So, I do not need to plug in the Phillips router anywhere, and just need to plug in the Dongle upstairs. At this point I am a bit limited to how I go about connecting the two, but I will give it a go. Thank you.

Can you run a cable from the first router to the second upstairs? Try the dongle see if it can see the main router it might depending on the range

No, it is too far to run a cable to, Samuria. I am now looking at usb2.0 wlan message. " does not have a driver. So, I will try and download some drivers to see if that works. Thank you.

Thank you , Samuria. I will take a look at that method and see how I am fixed to get one. Cheers. If I get one and it works, I shall get back to you and let you know.

Hi Vger. my apolegies for not replying a bit sooner. The Dongle part did not work. I Had windows 7 on . I decided to try Linux unbuntu and also use 2 plugs . One downstairs, connected to the mains, and a cable from there into a socket on my Router. Then I connected the other mains plug and the cable from that into the pc upstairs. These actually worked. Unbuntu picked up the wireless connection as it was installing the system. So, my heartfelt thanks you and the Guys who went out of their way to offer advice. All the very best for now.
