I bought a computer yesterday, second hand. I was on Windows 8, I upgraded it to Windows 8.1 and it is telling me that Windows is not activated, if I try to enter the product key it tells me that product key has been blocked and that I would need to buy a new one to activate Windows. Does this sound like it is not a genuine copy of Windows on the PC? It is doing updates no problem, and it upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 no problem. The guy I bought it off gave me the product key with the computer so I am a bit confused.

Would buying a copy of Windows 10 solve this or should I be taking the PC back?

I have an Advent DT2410.

I am new here so not really sure if I have given enough information, so if you need to know anything else just let me know, Thanks.

Hi guiltsponge and welcome to PCHF :)

Unfortunately it appears that Windows is pirated and can not be activated. You can buy a Windows 10 key, download Windows 10 and install it and that'll solve your issues :)

Windows 8 keys can not be bought except through 3rd parties. I would recommend buying a key directly through Microsoft to eliminate possible threats from 3rd party sellers.

If you want, you can call Microsoft and see if they can get you working. To do so, do the following:

  1. Select the Start button , enter PC settings, and then select PC settings from the list of results.
  2. Select Activate Windows, and then select Contact customer support for help.

You may be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.
  3. Select your location (or the location nearest you) from the drop-down list, and then select Next.
  4. Call one of the available phone numbers listed. An automated system will guide you through the activation process.
