Hi all, since the 20th of November my computer has been restarting every day at roughly 24hrs apart (some days its the same time, sometimes its several minutes later) A pop -up appears saying there has been a problem and windows will restart in 1 minute. There is no option to avoid this and in the power menu, all options are disabled. When the computer restarts it opens with file explorer open to one of my external drives. This never happens on a normal start up.

I looked at the error logs and there is an error against the Wininit appllication and says

A critical system process, C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000409. The machine must now be restarted.

This has happened now on

25th @ 16:22, 24th @ 16:12, 23rd @ 16:12, 22nd @ 16:08, 21st @ 16:08, 20th @ 15:49

I understand its a security check failure, but is anyone able to shed any light on what that failure might be, why it is happening and how to stop it??

Let’s do a full workup of your system.
No personal data is published and everything shown is safe.

1) Download Speccy by Piriform.
In Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
Paste that link into your post. Is Speccy safe?

2) Download GetSystemInfo by Kaspersky.
In GSI, click Start. (takes about 10mins)
It makes a ZIP file on your desktop, drag that to their GSI Parser site.
Once analysed, paste the newly created URL into your post.

3) Download MiniToolBox by Farbar.
In MTB, tick List Installed Programs, click Go then close the program.
A file MTB.txt is created in the same folder, attach that to your post.

4) No software interrogates the Power Supply Unit so list the make/model.

From the Speccy report;
  • C:\ and E:\ has shown multiple high temperatures. Open up the case, check air vents, heatsinks, fan blades, and power supply for dust.
  • your motherboard BIOS is version F51d, latest (albeit old) is F53d
For good measure, from an elevated command prompt, run;
  • sfc /scannow
  • chkdsk /r
  • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase
I would also create another user account and login under that profile to see if it may be a setting, schedule task, or software issue.

I dont think high temperatures would be the cause of this. Surely that would be random and not at the same time. However, I have cleaned it out, but still had a shutdown afterwards. Not run the other things yet.

4) No software interrogates the Power Supply Unit so list the make/model.

Please provide the above that was also requested, can we have the brand and model name or number + the age of the PSU.

Thanks.

So I've tried running the things people suggested and its still doing it.
If I dont have the PC on when its due to restart, then it kicks in about an hour after I do start it up.

The power supply is a XFX Pro450

@stephen74 There are a lot of errors in your event viewer a few of these below along with several other critical errors.

Code:
A critical system process, C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000409. The machine must now be restarted.

I think it is time for a repair install with an in place upgrade.

Once you have completed that: (y)

Download
O&O Shutup Ten
Move it to your documents folder.
Right click run as admin.
Go to actions, apply all settings.
Create the restore point when prompted.
Follow thru the prompts, and reboot if needed to apply the settings.

Have not tried the above suggestion yet as I wanted to try something else first. Eevry time it restarts it opens up file explorer to my external storage device. So I switched it off to see if it was related. Sadly it didnt make a difference.

I will try the above for tomorrow reset. Unfortunately I can only test one thing a day.

Ok, new Minitoolbox and Speccy logs that will tell us simply what happened with the repair and how it went wrong.
No worries the logs will tell us if the instructions were carried out,. :)

Did you ever get to checking the dust build up in the case?
It's been a couple of weeks now, is the every day shutdown still happening?

Regarding points in post #4, what hasn't been done from those?

Still happens every day. It will happen at the same time two days in a row, then it will be about 4 or 5 minutes later for the next two days and so on. If I dont have the PC on at that time, it will happen about an hour after I log on, then return to the same patter of two days at the same time, next two days a little later.

Dust inside is fine, I clean my system regularly.

I've completed all steps that have been suggested so far, except for the post that came in today. I'll try removing Norton today. Interestingly, before this started I got an unusual notification from Norton about reaching my limit on licenses for devices. I only have one device and only one licence and have never seem that pop up before. The first shutdown came shortly after that.
