Hey everyone,
I have an old Dell laptop that came with Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10 during the free upgrade period. It was used often until about 3 years ago when it was put away. I'm using it right now to write this and it's functioning well, but it's having a problem with things like Windows Update and the Microsoft Store app. I had to manually download the most recent updates because it would not update on its own, it said it could not access the internet even though it was connected to WiFi and I could use my browser. I tried to download Spotify through the Microsoft Store app and it wouldn't come up at all, it says "Page could not be loaded, try again later". One thing I found interesting is that after the free upgrade, Windows 10 never did activate properly and it was used for a couple of years like that. After manually installing updates and playing with some things today, I was able to get Windows 10 activated, although I'm not sure how I did it. This laptop is not going to be used much in the future, but it would be nice to get everything working properly. I will do a fresh install of Windows 10 if I have to, now that it's showing as activated. But before I do that, I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what I could do.

Sidenote: this is my first time back on PCHF in a long time. My first ever post was on the old site (.com) in which I had a problem with my internet config on another computer after the free upgrade. Now, 4 years later, I found the time to do a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro and get it up and running, and it reminded me of this site and how helpful everyone is.

Activation issues.

I'd be wiping it and reloading a fresh Windows version after creating a new bootable DVD or USB stick using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool found here; https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Activation is a automatic process that Windows does in the background as soon as the PC is connected to the web.
Your issues trying to get it activated suggests an underlying problem somewhere.

During the reload you can either enter the WIn7 Product Key when requested, or if it truly is recognised as activated on the MS servers, you could just tick the box "I don't have a Product Key" and it should auto re-activate upon installation completion. If not, ou can then enter the Win7 Product Key at a later stage.
 
A fresh clean windows install is ALWAYS preferred over a upgrade, and is entirely legal providing your copy of 7 was.

I agree, I wish I had known that before going with the free upgrade program 4 years ago because that was nothing but trouble on all computers I tried it on. Live and learn!

I just learned this recently, I think this is great! I was under the impression that you had to buy a Windows 10 license if you missed the upgrade period. I tried it on a Dell Precision I have that had windows 8.1 and missed the upgrade period on and it worked without a problem.
