I noticed today that my wife's Win10 Laptop is showing Windows as using up 39gb.
Seems a bit excessive?
Any comments/suggestions to reduce size?

Thanks

my \windows folder is 29GB, so you aren't too much away from that.
get WizTree from here; http://antibody-software.com/web/so...using-the-most-disk-space-on-your-hard-drive/
it's a small utility that will show where all your drive space is going to.
most likely it'll be \winsxs taking up most of your \windows space and although it can be cleaned, there are downsides in doing that.

if the drive overall still has plenty of free space, I wouldn't be worrying too much over it.
you can also run CCleaner from here; https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds to clean up the obviously crap from your drive.

After the most recent creators update I did notice that it created the windows.old directory for roll back. Now that I have cleared that out it in the 20 some odd GiB. Prior to that it was showing close to 32 GiB.

That's why I'm wondering if Roger is referring to the Windows folder only? The link I gave will clean any and all the update junk.

Gus/Rustys,
I am referring to the Windows folder ony.
This folder is using 39 GB of which the following are the main users within the folder:
winsxs - 17.1GB
software distribution - 7.1GB
system 32 - 5.0GB
installer - 4.0GB
syswow64 - 1.3 GB
assembly - 1.1GB
+ several lesser others.

For interest the following showed up in the Treesize scan: (amongst other things of course)
$windows.~bt - 6.1GB
Recovery - 4.5GB
swsetup - 3.8GB

I have already carried out Diskcleanup.

Thanks

what's the overall free space on that drive?
as stated earlier, \winsxs can be cleansed but you lose the ability to rollback updates. unless space is super critical and other options have been exhausted, \winsxs should be left alone.
other factors if space is tight, do you use hibernation?, if not turn that off from an elevated command prompt, type powercfg -h off
then what about the pagefile, you can relocate that to another drive (if available) or reduce the minimum/maximum size.
also, can Restore Points reserved space be reduce to 1%, or turned off?

Run the cleanup if you have updated. You can only roll back for thirty days anyway. This is what cleanup did for this PC and another almost identical.

Bruce,
Overall free space 807gb - after turning off hibernation 808gb. (My original concern was that windows Usage was high)
(I appreciate there is plenty of room on PC).

Gus,
Not exactly sure what you are saying in your screenshot?

from memory, it only shows up if cleanmgr is run from an elevated command prompt.
I run my clean ups this way....
cleanmgr c: /sageset:1
that will show a complete list of areas it cleans, tick the ones you want covered and hit enter, your choices are then remembered.
to run those choices you type cleanmgr /sagerun:1

this way you can have something like /sagerun:50 which includes Windows Updates catergory and /sagerun:42 which doesn't.
the number can be anything up to 65,000.

When I open Disk Cleanup, Windows Update Cleanup doesn't appear in the list of items to tick.
I don't know if you do have any Windows updates, and it will only show Windows Update Cleanup if you have had updates, but see if you have any other items as per the guide? Disk cleanup requires no special privileges to run.

Bruce/Gus,
Just noticed that when I carry out Disk Clean-up, it does do Windows Cleanup.
(open disk cleanup/click OK for "C".....when done, click on Clean Up System Files)
Windows Cleanup is done, amongst other things.
Anything else to do/try?

Try this go under Settings then System.
Now there should be on the left one that states Storage select that one.
Form here select This PC
Scroll down to Temporary Files and select that.
NOTE: some time I can get it to work selecting all of the boxes and clicking Remove Files other times I have to do each one one at a time.

you've done all you can without cutting too deep.
if you want to clean the PC in general, try CCleaner from here; https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
but your Windows folder isn't that bad in the scheme of things, your overall free space is fine and I think we have pinpointed your \winsxs and \software distribution folders as the main culprits and there is nothing you can do to those folders without potential consequences.
