I've searched and applied various fixes the past few days with no luck

Restarted explorer from task manager

Restarted sihost

Ran sfc tool said it found corrupt files but couldn't fix them

Ran dism it got 82% thru then stopped

When starting my computer like usual I can login but my desktop never loads. No icons and I can see my cursor but when I put it in the lower Taskbar error it just has the spinning busy symbol perpetually

I can access task manager by control alt delete and that takes a while to load and I see the main windows explorer have a status of suspended. Restarting it solves nothing

On the sign-in page I can hold shift and click restart to get to the trouble shooter to get into safe mode or repair etc but my laptop screen is damaged and unreadable and I have read safe mode has trouble coming up on an external monitor?

But I did get it to boot up in safe mode that way somehow bypassing that but I dunno what I did differently if anything as now I can't get back there. I ran dism thing while I was in safe mode but it got stuck around 82 %

I tried updating windows then restarted but now I can't get back to safe mode... Or at least I can't see it on my external mon

What you describe can be signs of a bad hard drive and/or Windows corruption.

Are this issue and the damaged screen related at all as in was the computer dropped damaging the screen + then getting boot issues.

Screen broke a looooong time ago and been using an external mon ever since

Safe mode did load a couple times and the internet and everything was working OK.. But the start button wasn't responding there either for what that's worth

Sounds more like Windows corruption then.

Couple of questions if I may;

What is the brand and model name or number of the notebook.

How much free storage space do you recall seeing on the hard drive, 400GB free on a 1TB HDD for example.

Del latitude

Don't remember free space amount but it's far from maxed out

Im gonna go grab an hdmi cable and see if that will let me see the screen in safe mode vs my current standard external min setup

Do you happen to know how many different version of Dell Latitude there are because I don`t as there are so many, we could do with the exact model number so we can do some research, get us the model number if you can but now we know it is is a Dell we can ask whether or not you have tried the built in Dell diagnostics.

The steps are;

  1. Restart your Dell PC.
  2. When the Dell logo appears, press F12 key to enter One-time Boot Menu.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select Diagnostics and press Enter key on the keyboard.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts and respond appropriately to complete the diagnostics.
    If the test fails, write down the error code and validation code.
And the Dell link is here
