Hi wonderful people!

Had BSOD come up a few times over the last couple of weeks. Last time was when I tried to do the ASWMB prework for this thread. BSOD said 'Driver IRQL not less or equal' . Then today, I was just reading emails(online Yahoo) & it crashed on me, giving message; Faulty Hardware Corrupted Page.

Help please??

Follow the instruction form the post here

Yeah sorry forgot to say, no minidump & couldn't find the right section in control panel - didn't seem to have options given in instructs. I will have another look in the morn.

OK, I had to jump thru all those hoops in the instrucs, then run ASWMBR to cause the BSOD again in order to get a... little poo! It's attached here

Avast appears to be the problem, we will need more info to work with so do the following for us if you will;

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Thanks, only other thing of note shown in Speccy is that Windows is way out of date, you can put this right by going here and updating to version 1909, lets see if we can get rid of Avast first, just to let you know, Avast has become a monster and the one time favourite is no longer recommended by most forums, it can also be a nightmare to remove and so much so that it sometimes needs to be taken care of on the malware removal forums.

Please create a new system restore point first.

See Avast clean removal info here

Oh really?? I had automatic updates for Windows happening until only about a month ago, when hiccups(sorry, can't recall what, something not working properly & I googled...) caused me to uninstall the last & put it on hold - I must have forgotten to restart.

I have the paid subscription to Avast. What would you recommend instead, or does the Windows built iin one work well enough these days? So I will just try to uninstall Avast now, turn on the Windows one & let you know how I go. Should I do another Speccy after I try to uninstall?

OK, I've created a restore point before starting anything. I've apparently successfully removed Avast Security & Cleanup without hitch. I've checked that Windows security is on. I've downloaded the latest Win updater. I've created another restore point, post Avast, pre update, now I've started the updater.

Have now updated Windows. I then did a Speccy, saved it as a txt & managed to x out of it before doing it to a website, so please let me know if you want me to copy & paste here, or do another & give the web addy for it? Fingers x'd probs resolved now!

Can you post a new Speccy url for us so that we can check for any traces of Avast.

I mentioned how bad that Avast has become, take a look at the feedback here

You can see for yourself that Avast still shows up in Speccy, told you it was a nightmare :(

Not seeing any additional Windows updates having been installed and no signs of Windows Defender updating, do the following then post a new Speccy url for us.

If you stick with only Windows Defender, once any other AV has been correctly uninstalled, check to see if Windows Defender has auto enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.

Try reinstalling your browser, Avast hides plug ins in them.

Regarding any third party AV, pre Windows 8 I used to use Avast free and it was great, didn`t need it with Windows 8 and have been using Windows Defender & Firewall ever since and not had one single issue.

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Avast is still listed but Defender is running and updating so you are at least protected.

We can try catching any traces of Avast an other way but before we do we should ask if we have been able to resolve the original issue, any more BSOD?

Groan... yup. I just tried to run aswmbr again & while last time it opened for me, started downloading Avast virus updates(or some such), then when I hit run, it crashed, this time, it just crashed as soon as I clicked on the program. Interestingly tho, you said the Windows update apparently hadn't worked, and I have restarted the computer since, but this time when it restarted, I got a different lock screen, then got the 'Get even more out of Windows', as if it had just updated.

So... yes please, tell me your next suggestion for eradicating the beast!

And I had installed Avast on my daughter's machine too, which has been having random freezing & glitching issues, so tried to remove it from hers too, but it also shows as still there, so will have to start another thread on that too! As it's not crashing on her tho, which subforum do you suggest I put that one?

Explained at the start of thread, first thought virus, so went to do prework for a thread in that section(it was merged into this thread). Asmwb is malwarebytes & thàt caused a BSOD, so just tried it again...

Sorry, had no idea of anything being malware related and having never heard of aswmbr I needed to ask.

If this aswmbr has not long caused a BSOD can you upload the dmp for us, please use the method below for doing so;

1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box
