A while back I installed windows 11 on my pc even though the health check said I couldn't because of my processor, AMD A8-7410 APU.
I uninstalled it because I read somewhere that I may not get ms updates, including security updates, at some time. I also read where I could be in danger of getting the dreaded BSOD.
Does anyone know any more about doing this, now that win 11 has been out for a while?

I’m running Win 11 on an unsupported laptop (processor not supported) & it runs smoothly & is receiving updates incl the 22H2.
I have a Windows 10 image saved so can go back should things stop working or there’s problems.
Win 10 is supported ‘til 2024/2025 I believe.
 
I might give it a go again.
It's not right that MS does this and pretty much forces ppl to buy a new pc, lots of ppl.

It’s to do with security I believe. Older PCs may not have a tpm installed.
Microsoft have a minimum requirement for Win 11 yet even though many older PCs meet or better these requirements they cannot officially install that OS. MS need to reconsider their decision to exclude older processors imo.

The free version is all you need.
I select my C:\ drive (with all it's partitions) and Image This Disk...
I dump it to an external drive.

this has the benefit that if I ever wanted to retrieve some files, the .mrimg file can simply be double clicked to mount it in Windows with a drive letter and it makes copy/paste dead simple.

you could also use Clone This Disk... if you want to make an exact replicate of the current drive to simply plug and play come d-day.

all depends on what you are trying to safe guard yourself against.
 
I'll probably do my backup sometime between now and Sunday, 22nd January. Then install win 11.

Another setback! I'm going to have to order a new ext HD because the one I was going to use, shows up in disc management but not in file explorer. It's telling me. It's not letting me initialize the disc, says fatal error. The new HD should be here in a couple of days from Amazon. I was using a WD Elements 25A2. Probably going to order from a different manufacturer. Any suggestions?

When i try to initialize, it tells me: fatal device hardware error, using disc management, It shows up here, but not in file explorer.
 
external drives by their very nature are more prone to knock related issues.
if the platters were spinning and the unit got bumped hard enough (and 'hard enough' can be as little as a nudge sometimes) then that could explain it.
or even if the heads were parked and the unit dropped from, say, chest height, that would also potentially kill it.
it all depends.....

your last resort would be to reformat the drive and see if you get lucky, but they don't cost much these days, and you have a replacement coming anyway. and I see it's a SSD, so no more g-force related issues going forward!
 
Disc management, to initialize, tells me: the request failed due to a fatal device hardware error.

I got Win 11 installed on my unsupported pc. The only thing that flunked the Windows test was the processor, an
AMD A8-7410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics, 2200 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) everything else passed.
We'll see how it goes. Right now it's running great. During installation, I ticked, keep everything, files, apps, etc. When it 1st started up, it looked just like I was still on Win 10, but I wasn't. Nothing is missing, everything is in place.

I do have a Macrium clone backup of my previous Win 10 install, just in case.

let's keep this open for a few more days to see if things stay on the straight and narrow for you.

I am on the Insider program with Microsoft. I am on the Dev channel. My laptop is pretty good. I get all the updates and latest builds of Windows free. Took four attempts to get the latest build to install.

I think people need to start upgrading to Windows 11 as support for 10 will end.

Windows 11 still has bugs and rendered my Asus touch screen useless.

There is also a work around for TMP.

I think you should think about making the move to Windows 11. Maybe dual boot 10 and 11?
