Hi,

I have a laptop which is currently running Windows 7. The laptop is around 10 years old but is in good shape and running really well so I'm reluctant to replace it. I have reviewed the minimum spec recommended by Microsoft and as far as I can see Windows 10 should be fine. However, I'm a bit unsure of how well it will run if the laptop hardware only just meets the minimum requirements.

I read here that it's still possible to upgrade for free. Is it worth a shot? Can I roll back to Windows 7 if needs be? I have also looked at replacing with Linux Mint, Ubuntu etc. but wanted to explore the option of Windows 10 first.

Any advice would be great.

Would be better if you posted the model of your Notebook.
Personally I have installed W10 Home x64 on a HP 6910p and runs just fine -mind you, I'm not playing any games, just Netflix, TV and some movies.

Something to keep in mind is-happened to me...- that Microsoft has labeled certain W7 drivers as not safe anymore, and has them disabled.
That means you cannot install them, as is the case with my Infra-red camera driver.


I'd say make a complete image of your HDD so you can restore everything back.

It is a Dell Studio 1555.

I have the OS installed on a partition which is separate from my personal data. Will the upgrade process take that into account?

I will back up all my data as a precaution anyway.

I probably won't have to attempt the upgrade for a couple of days but I'll let you know how I get on.
 
Sorry, one last question.

Taking into the hardware, will the choice of a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 10 impact how well the system will perform?
 
You can also replace the SATA HDD with a SSD one. This will make your system much faster plus leaving the old HDD and data intact.
 
Hi,

Just to let you know I completed the upgrade to Windows 10 today and everything seems to be working fine.

I already have an SSD but I might follow up with the option of installing more memory.
