Lately my pc has been slowing down noticeably and the day before yesterday I had an update. On reboot INoticed several changes.

I now have a small box with four horizontal lines running through it.

In addition the pc is running really slow and the display has enlarged considerably. Icons have shifted locations. Also some programs are crashing on attempts to load them, such as higher demand games.

No idea.

Have you tried rolling back/uninstalling the update or even using system restore to see if the problem remains?
I would check to see if the graphics driver is still installed. It may be the update removed, updated or corrupted the driver.
Can you supply a screenshot of the box?
