I have a Toshiba laptop that I got last year that came with win 8.1. The computer, for a few weeks, was acting really slow and the pages were not turning. Finally I got a grey screen and nothing more. Tried system restore right before the grey screen appeared but going back in time didn't help. I have Trend Micro virus protection but no virus was detected. Now, with the grey screen, its doing nothing but displaying a grey screen. I kept pushing buttons and got the laptop to erase all the files, and I do mean everything. Next, I tried to get the Toshiba to take the recovery discs and boot them but it kept refusing to do so. So the next step I tried was trying to load wins 7. It took 7 with no issues. I was happy until.............I could not get on the internet. A message said your driver was missing. I tried both wifi hookup and ethernet hookup but it was a no go. I am at a loss at this point and could use some help. Is there hope in saving this laptop?

Also if you could include the Serial number to look up the system on the Toshiba web site and help you get the proper drives for the system. Basically you will have to download the drives and install them for all of the hardware that is in the system so it will work properly?

Here is the site if you want to look as well.

How do you know this if it was just a grey screen?

Now, with the grey screen, its doing nothing but displaying a grey screen.

Where there any error messages if so what (if you remember), did they load/boot form at all?

Was this form an OEM disk or another recover set for another system?

Is the systems recovery partition still on the system maybe we can also use that to factory restore the system.

Toshiba Satellite C55-C5240. Serial # 5F119890C. Reply #1. I am familiar with the "blue screen of death" but this laptop was displaying a solid lite grey screen at the end before I crashed it. No numbers or characters, just grey. Reply #2. I am sorry on the error messages but trying to rack my brain on what the message was; I am thinking it said "invalid disk" when I tried loading the three recovery discs. I tried it several times, not just once. And I tried all three of them. Reply #3. The Win 7 disk is a legit original, NOT A COPY, of the actual program. The laptop downloaded this without any issues. It took it on the first try. Reply #4. I do not know where to look for the systems recovery partition. I will tell you this. The hard drive, I think, was completely erased. It went thru a 24 hour process of erasing the hard drive. I was the one who initiated this process by "pushing buttons". I was hoping I could wipe out the (virus?) and get it to working again.

Thank you for the information.

Can you post a screen shot of the Disk Management
With this thread open.
Click Start
Right Click on Computer
Click on Manage

When the Computer Management window comes up maximize it and look on the list on the left side.
Select Disk Management
Press the Prt Scr (Print Screen) button

Go back to this thread and you can paste the picture in one of two ways.
First select the box where you type your reply
Then you can Right Click and select paste or press Ctrl+V

Give me a bit to look up driver information.
Need to know the Windows 7 was it 64 or 32 bit?
Do you know what the specific hardware is. that is in the system?

Maybe something to think about. There are also links that cove how to access the recovery partition. You can also order a copy of the recovery disk.

I think I am giving you the info you requested. If this is not right, I'll look some more.

There will be no recovery partition because Windows 7, that you installed, overwrote the Windows 8.1 recovery partition. You have a small boot partition and Windows 7, that's it.
This is a 64 bit version of Windows 7 as shown in the bottom screen under System type.

You can try contacting Toshiba to see if they have a factory restore/recovery DVD for your laptop.

Of course the gray screen you got may indicate a hardware failure and no software will fix that.

I have no problem with using Win 7 for my OS since 8.1 has been wiped out. Can you help me connect to the internet. This is the screen I get when I diagnose why I have no connection:

If you have a working computer and USB thumb drive available, download Speccy and copy and run it on your laptop and then attach its log. That'll give us the network adapter info we need. :)
