Hey all,

I am trying to set-up my home network with a combo of wired and Wi-Fi. I have several questions on equipment to get and how to set-up.

It has been suggested that I incorporate a VPN into the network, is it better to use a service like from Norton (my current AV software) or get a physical device?
Should I also use a firewall?
How good are these 'Whole Home WIFI' systems you can buy?

I do have a Motorola Modem and an ASUS WI-FI router already.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
The best and most secure way to set up a home network is to hard wire it, anything else is a compromise. No reason to have a VPN on a home lan. Your router should have a firewall and so should your operating system.
 
So for my desktop, media center, PS4 and TVs w/streaming services I should hard wire it to the router with no VPN. I also have 2 laptops, 2 ipads and 5 smartphones, for these I was planning on using the Wi-Fi, should I use a VPN just for the Wi-Fi then?
 
If I may make a few suggestions.

Hide the SSID this will prevent it from being broadcasted for the world to see.

Depending on which one that you are planning on using for the WiFi I would also configure it where only these IP address are allowed and or Mac addresses.

As far as a VPN I would only use one if I am utilizing hot spots remember though you get what you pay for.
 
Hide the SSID on the modem and router, correct? or all the devices?
Each device has its own IP and MAC address correct? I would just have to locate it and then follow the prompts for my particular WiFi router, correct?
