Until recently I could always amend a saved notebook file and then close the file by clicking the X at the upper right corner of the page.

But now clicking the X doesn't get the usual offer to "save" or "not save" the amended file.

Instead there is string of three notebook file names at the top of the page and I have to click on the name of file I'm using to get the "save" or "not save" choice.

After I've do that another notebook file appears (with the name of one of those in that string above).

How can I get back to what I once had?

if I click on "Mail" tab a notebook file named "Mail" appears.
Following you suggestion didn't change anything. Do you know of anything more to try ?
I'm also having trouble getting an "Untitled" notebook to use. Maddening

what happens when you click the Start button, then start typing notepad, then click under Best Match, the Notepad app?

I'm surprised I've received such few replies to my question. Did I not explain my problem with enough clarity or what
Could be because you do not answer the questions already asked.
@xrobwx71 advised to click on the X on the mail tab and your reply was
if I click on "Mail" tab a notebook file named "Mail" appears
You have not stated if you clicked on the mail tab X as advised.
Then @Rustys asked in post #5 did you close the tabs as advised and you have not responded.

Being that the OP revisited the forum but chose not to reply this thread will be closed.
