Solved Should I get a Wifi extender or should I try Google Nest Wifi

Hello to all I am currently using Telus Fiber 150 and after upgrading my wireless router from Asus AC1200 to a Tp-link Ax1800 Wifi 6 router in the basement. The download speed had been improved from 7-8 Mbps to 35 to 44 Mbps when I use my laptop and smartphone on my second floor.

May I know if I install a Wifi extender next to my wireless router, would this improve my download speed on the second floor?

Or should I buy a 2pack Google Nest Wifi with one extra point and put the main Nest wifi router at the basement and the extra point on the second floor.


Please kindly shed some light for me.

A wifi extender is designed to be placed away from the router to boost the wifi signal. You would place it on the second floor and it would boost the signal on the second floor.

Google Wifi is a good system. It's called a mesh system. You have your base unit which connects to the modem, and then you have your satellite system which would go upstairs.

Honestly I would try a wifi extender first to see if that solves your issue. If not, a mesh system like Google Wifi would be best :)

and I'll add my 2 cents worth to what jmarket has already said.

the wifi extender will only extend the signal it can receive.
that is, crap in equals crap out.
put the extender on the limits of the current wireless signal range and it'll have crap speeds.
your laptop/phone signal strength to the extender may be great, but the extender to the router will be the weakest link.
so make sure the extender has very low signal attenuation to the router.

while the extender may work for you, I have had more success in simply getting a really good modem/wifi router with multiple antennas and beam forming technology. they cost way more but really pump out a strong signal.

also, with all things wireless, they work better with the transmitter mounted as high as possible, rather than down in the basement.
if possible, try and get the modem/router out of the basement - but that may be where the cable from outside terminates, but still.... worth considering. :)

See if this helps a bit.

Get a power-line adapted and connect one end to the modem relocated the router to the above floor and connect that to the other power-line adapter.
