Shift keys not working.

As it says in the title, both shift keys not working. It's not down to sticky keys, as they are turned off. It's the same in Safe Mode too. This is a Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows 7 Pro. I've inherited this laptop, but I'd like to get it working properly. I'm wondering if I need to replace the keyboard.

Try connecting a USB keyboard to the notebook, if no problems with that then you are looking at needing a new keypad.
 
Thanks, phillpower. Unfortunately, I don't have a USB keyboard to try out. Maybe I can borrow one. Looks like replacement Thinkpad keyboards are pretty cheap and easy to replace, so no big deal anyway, I guess.

Okay, just checked it with my neighbour's keyboard -- while carefully observing the social distancing guidelines! :0) -- and the shift keys still didn't work. So I'm going to order a replacement keyboard. Might as well replace the touchpad while I'm at it too. Many thanks for your time, and please feel free to archive the thread or delete it or whatever.

If the shift keys also did not work on an external USB keyboard there may not be anything wrong with the keypad and the issue is software or settings related.

Checked all the settings, and not sure what else to try now. Will let you know if a new keyboard resolves the issue. Thanks.
 
If you can get into the BIOS, look for a setting that restores the factory default settings, this only affects the hardware settings and has nothing to do with the software.

Question, why havn`t you upgraded to Windows 10, you can still do it for free.
