On Win11 I can't do any settings change as I try to open settings, it brings up a screen with a 'gear' icon, then closes.
On occasion I get a message that an invalid reference to memory location (all zeroes if I remember right).

I can't do a system reset since I cant get to settings. Suggestions?

This is an HP Pavillion laptop I got earlier this year new.

Any reasonable help is appreciated.

I am an ol Unix sysadmin, but retired for over 15 years now. I have war stories, but they don't fix this issue. Here I feel like an 'end user'.

Can you open command prompt/Powershell/terminal by right clicking the Start button?
If yes-
Right click on start & choose powershell with admin & type/copy & paste these cmds one at a time then click Enter:
SFC /SCANNOW
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Can you open .exe files?
Can you download OK?

If not-
If you force restart 3 times it should reach the troubleshoot menu where you can reset Windows I believe.

I did those, then rebooted.
I rebooted once after doing those.
Yes, I can open/run exe files.
Yes, I can download OK. I had to download and update Powershell before I could run those commands.
Good suggestions, just didn't work. I will reboot a couple more times to make sure I do get the full effect.

I would now try an in-place repair by downloading the Windows 11.iso, mounting this & choosing setup. Ensure keep everything/keep apps & files is automatically selected & continue With the repair.
