(sorry for bad english)

GPU is a RTX 3080
CPU is Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900KF @ 3.70GHz
64 GB RAM Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1329MHz
Motherboard is an ASUS Tuf Gaming Z490-Plus
PSU is 750W | Cooler Master

So this happened for the first time while playing a game on steam (Superliminal), the screen would go black with a "no signal" message after 10 minutes of so of game time, forcing me to turn the pc off and on again, I managed to find a solution on steam forums, by editing a registry in the game's regedit folder from "Screenmanager Fullscreen mode_"bunch of numbers" to "Screenmanager Fullscreen mode_1" and it stopped happening when playing that game, I finished it the same day as it is a short game and uninstalled it.

Fast forward around 6 days and the same problem happened again, this time not while playing a game, but while using the internet normally, turning it off and on again worked and the screen came back, the following day it happened again, but this time turning it off and on didn't work immediately (I tried it the following day after coming home from work and it worked again), I tried changing hdmi cables and it also didn't work, during this time I managed to use the pc by streaming what was supposed to appear on the screen by using the steam link mobile app, as a test I also connected a nintendo switch on my monitor and it worked

I contacted a technician and he came here this morning, he stress tested all my components and everything worked perfectly, he checked the drivers and found out some display drivers were outdated and updated them. It happened again a couple of hours ago, but this time the fans started to spin really fast and made a lot of noise, which didn't happend the other times.

The following error appeared on event viewer around the time it happened

This message didn't appear the time rebooting didn't work neither when it happened while playing the game,

Searching for dwm.exe crashes on google and some people had similar problems, but for all of them it was happening when playing highly demanding games, which was not the case for me, I had a vaguely similar problem with the screen turning black for a split second while gaming, which would sometimes crash the game, and it turned out it was the xbox gamepad firmware

Laptop or desktop?
If desktop then check the cables to the monitor are fully connected. If possible try another cable.

It’s a desktop, I doubt it’s just the cables, the time it didn’t come back after rebooting I tried replacing the display port for a spare HDMI and the image didn’t appear, also the fans suddenly going fast the last time it happened don’t seem to be compatible with the problem being the cable

When you changed to HDMI cable did you also change the input to HDMI on the monitor?
I would use DDU to cleanly uninstall the gpu driver & then install a fresh version from the manufacturer’s website.

I did change the input on the monitor. I just uninstalled the drivers with dud and I’m reinstalling the drivers right now. I will probably need a few days without the problem happening to be sure it worked, as it usually happens after hours of it being on

Thinking about it, a lot of things point out to the problem being in the monitor itself, I said I managed to connect my switch to it and get signal when my pc wasn’t sending any but actually when I first connected it it gave no signal and only started giving after some minutes, I only tried to connect the pc again the following day. Could it be a problem in it is causing the lack of signal and it needs some time off to be able to get signal again? It would explain why I can still see the screen using my phone when it happens, but the gpu fans going super fast the last time it happened doesn’t make sense if that’s the case

You will need to ensure that windows did not reinstall a generic driver after the reboot/clean with DDU

This will prevent windows update from installing drivers when you reboot.

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy the code below, do not copy the word code.
  • Paste into open notepad.
  • Save to desktop as 456.reg
  • Right click 456.reg and select merge.
  • Reboot the computer for changes to take effect.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching]
"SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UpdatePolicy\PolicyState]
"ExcludeWUDrivers"=dword:00000001

Download and install DDU
Boot Into Safe Mode.
Remove the Display drivers, with DDU
Reboot back into normal mode.
Reinstall and uncheck everything except the driver.
With the Nvidia Clean install tool.

When you reboot after removing a driver windows will auto install, the steps above should null that.

Let's get some information from your machine, to see what is going on perhaps event log errors will lead us where we need to be.

Download the PCHFLogTool
Unzip to your desktop
Right Click run as admin.
Click Gather logs.
A new .txt named PCHF.txt will appear on your desktop.
Copy paste or attach that.

Click install Speccy:
Right click run as admin
Upon Completion:
Hit File
Publish Snap Shot
A link will appear, post that link.

Thinking about it, a lot of things point out to the problem being in the monitor itself,

Try connecting another screen, a TV that has the appropriate video port will do.

Just a fyi; getting a No Signal message on the screen normally suggests that the problem is with the source of the video or the cable that is carrying the video signal, you getting an on screen message even after changing the cable suggests that the problem is with the GPU.

PSU is 750W | Cooler Master

What is the exact model name or number of this PSU and how old is it.

Thread moved to the more appropriate hardware forum.

Hopefully it’ll work.

It's a MPE 7501-ACAAW, around 3.5 years old
I had to open it to check and one thing I noticed is that it took a good while for it to finally give signal again, this also happened other times I disconnected everything to clean it, I will try connecting another screen next time it happens
If it's the gpu, why does can I see the screen when using the steam link app?

I've done the clean reinstall after merging that .reg

PCHFLogTool gave me an error "Could not find a part of the path c:\Users\andre\desktop\PCHF.txt

Yeah I have to work some kinks out, runs on some machines some not. Thanks for letting me know the errors, that will help. Me with it.

Anyhow...

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop.
Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator.
When the program opens check mark Select All Then hit GO
Please post the log in your next reply. Attach or copy and paste, whatever is easier for you.

There are a lot of errors with some of your programs, likely not to do with your issue, if you would like I could make some suggestions about removing certain things.

There are driver update programs and a few other things that could go...

Also, preinstalled items that could go, two VPNs could cause issues.

Up to you really, You can wait to see how the system does after clean installing the graphics card drivers.

Getting the basic stuff in order is always a good idea...

@phillpower2 May have more to add as well.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

MPE 7501-ACAAW,

Rated as – Tier C • Low-end and so should not be used anywhere near an add on GPU and especially not a high end gaming GPU like you have.

You need a minimum of a 750W Gold efficiency rated PSU from one of the following, Corsair RM range, EVGA, Seasonic or Super Flower, seven year warranty period minimum but ideally ten

If the PSU is on its way out it could happen at any time but for sure the present PSU will be overheating internally when under load and when it does the OTP ( Over Temperature Protection ) will activate and either reduce power or turn off completely.

You need a new PSU regardless and I strongly suggest that you get your GPU tested on its own or alternatively see if you are able to borrow an appropriate PSU to swap in for testing purposes.

Mal is best placed to deal with anything software related but I will mention the below.

Driver Booster Scheduler
Driver Booster SkipUAC (andre)
Driver Booster Update

Get rid of the above, it is nothing but snakeoil, see my canned info below;

Once Windows has been installed, you install the necessary drivers for the MB and other hardware and then leave well alone, drivers should not be allowed to auto update and you should never update any driver/s unless the new drivers are intended to resolve a specific issue that you are having, installing new drivers unnecessarily can actually cause you the very issues that any new drivers are intended to resolve and uninstalling the new drivers may not resolve the problem/s that installing the new drivers has caused.

Depending on priority it can take many months before the driver provider releases any fix and depending on the age of the hardware or software concerned they sometimes do not even bother or may have already announced an end of support.

Sorry about the quotes

Those driver programs were installed by the technician to make his tests, I’ll get rid of them, what are those pre installed programs and other things that could go?

I’m pretty sure that antivirus alert is a false positive I’ve been getting for years, an attached link for a receipt in an email I received many years ago that was stored in the cached files

I’ll try getting a new psu, but in my setup it’s is in a difficult position to reach to make the change. How do you suggest I test my gpu, is there a good program to test it’s failing?

You don`t test a GPU using a junk PSU, this unless you want to brick it, that and the rest of your hardware if the PSU goes bang.

Fwiw: No decent tech uses those sort of programs, they do the job properly by either using a driver disk provided or by sourcing any required drivers themselves online.

What are those pre installed programs and other things that could go?

Run this batch file, and follow the suggestions as the bottom of the page.
GeekUnisntaller, O&O shutup 10 etc.

As far as preinstalled items.

Advanced SystemCare (HKLM-x32\...\Advanced SystemCare_is1) (Version: 17.6.0 - IObit)
Anything labled ASUS as it comes preinstalled, and not really needed, I'd leave mother board and fan control.

When you use GeekUninstaller go thru and remove any preinstalled apps from MS that you do not use.

I've done everything in that link, thanks
I also bought a new PSU instead of just borrowing one (Corsair RM1000X, 1000W, 80 Plus Gold), if mine is so bad I figured it was worth it even without knowing if it was the cause of the issue
Since clean reinstalling the gpu drivers it hasn't happened, but think it is still too soon to be sure it's fixed as it since it began to happen it went some days without it happening
