Hello,
I hope someone can help. I am running Windows 11 with a 2.00 GHz processor, system 32 and 32 GB RAM. It has been VERY slow for the past few weeks. I rebooted everything and it worked for a short while, then resumed the slowness. Even simple keystrokes can lock up the computer for 2-3 minutes. I have done a quick scan with no threats detected. Yesterday, I tried disabling OneDrive, which seems to help a little (I use Dropbox exclusively). There are no pending updates for Windows or the Intel processor. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to PCHF

Please download FRST 64bit It is important FRST is downloaded to your desktop.
Once downloaded right click the FRST desktop icon and select "Run as administrator" from the menu
If you receive any security warnings, or the User Account Control warning opens at any time whilst using FRST you can safely allow FRST to proceed.
FRST will open with two dialogue boxes, accept the disclaimer.

  1. Then select Scan
  2. Frst will take a few minutes to scan your computer, and when finished will produce two log files on your desktop, FRST.txt, and Addition.txt.
  3. They will display immediately on the desktop, attach those both in your next reply.

  • Follow the instructions in the sequence advised.
  • Attach the logs into the replies.
  • Here at PCHelpForum we are mostly volunteers, so please be patient with us. I'll try to respond within 24 hours. You will be advised if it is expected to be longer than 48 hours.
  • Please let me know if you are going to be delayed in responding. If you do not reply after 5 days, I'll assume you do not want to continue and will close the topic.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool: Fix

  • Please download and save this attached fixlist.txt to the location where FRST64.exe resides (C:\Users\everg\OneDrive\Desktop\FRST64.exe)
  • Open FRST64.exe and press the Fix button once.
  • Be patient as the fixes are rolled out. You will probably be prompted to reboot your computer. Allow the reboot.
  • When the Fix is done, locate Fixlog.txt in the same folder as FRST64.exe
  • Attach Fixlog.txt to your next reply

Hi,

There were a lot of permission errors running the above fix. There might be a hardware issue with the hard drive. Have you had the JAJS600M1TB HDD for a long time? You should try this:

1. Download and install CrystalDiskInfo from the app publisher’s website.
2. Open CrystalDiskInfo, which immediately presents you with all pertinent information relating to your SSD(s) and HDD(s)
3. Press Function -> Hide Serial Number
4. Press Save -> Image. There's also a Save as Text option if you'd prefer that. Either is fine with me.
5. Post the information here for review

Looks to be in good shape according to this tool. Just a general recommendation, a solid state drive would net you a substantial increase in performance compared to the existing hard disk drive. Anyways, let's try to rule out malware.

  • Be patient as the fixes are rolled out. This one will reboot the computer and want to perform a check disk. The screen will say you have about 10 seconds to cancel this operation. Let it continue the assigned job

Please download FMRS.exe and save it to your desktop.

Note: Please save all your existing work / windows as this tool will attempt to close all non-essential processes during the course of its scan. This includes the internet browser you're currently using to view this message.
  • Right-click FMRS.exe and then left-mouse click Run as administrator.
  • Attach the FMRS_[datetime].txt log file on your desktop when the scan is complete

The FRST64.exe app did not reboot the computer. However, it produced a log, which is attached. The FMRS.exe app ending up freezing on a black screen for approximately 40 minutes. I thought it best to let you know before continuing.

Hi,

If you're still on a black screen, press ctrl alt + delete. Click Task Manager. Then look for "Run New Task". Type in EXPLORER and press OK
The desktop should be restored at this point.

The Fixlog is from an older fixlist.txt. Were you able to save the fixlist.txt to the same directory as before? C:\Users\everg\OneDrive\Desktop

I would focus on the Fixlist.txt and FRST first, as that one tries to fix corruption issues. Hold off on FMRS and Sophos for now please

Hi,

Can you try the same fix, except while logged into one of these two user accounts please?
  1. Shawn
  2. vanco
The account you are running fixes from is a Guest account, hence why we are having some issues deploying fixes. Sorry about that, I should have noticed sooner.

If you wanted to turn your existing user account into an administrator, you can follow these steps.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards

Hello,
I changed my account to have administrator privileges and deleted the two accounts I am not using. Ran FRST64 and attached the log.

Hi,

Let's try this,

1736669886686.webp

type in: cmd and press ENTER
Type in: chkdsk c: /f /r
Type in Y (Yes) and press ENTER
Close the command prompt window by typing exit and pressing ENTER
Now restart the computer using Start button -> Shutdown -> Restart
While the computer is booting back up, you should see a screen that says in 10 seconds a check disk will be performed. Verify if you see this screen or not, but do not press any key. Allow it to attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive

Afterwards, try running the two suggested tools and give me their reports please

Describe any troubles you experience along the way

Regards

Hi,

I'm glad to hear that :) The two scanners were OK, nothing really of note there that would inidicate an infection is the cause of your issues. I'd like to focus more on the state of the hard drive

First, I'd like to see the results of the chkdsk scan you ran. Follow these steps to gather the chkdsklog.txt described in the article
