Hi everyone, first I want to say a huge thank you to Malnutrition who guided me through the process of recovering my PC after being infected with ransomware. So now it's gone I started thinking about protection, yes I know its a bit late  I'm the first to admit I'm not a genius ! I was relying on my antivirus to protect me which it obviously didn't.
So can anyone recommend a tool to defend against ransomware ? do you use one ? I was looking at the one from Malwarebytes, it sounds exactly what I want but I think its still in Beta and has problems ? anyone used it ?

Thank you jmarket, I had been looking at "Malwarebytes anti-ransomware beta". I didn't realise the standard tool had this sort of protection. I'll go read up some more.

You could also use COMODO Internet Security which is compatible w/ Malwarebytes> https://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php COMODO Internet Security does Ransomware Protection as well.

Thank you Eddie, I just had a read and it also looks very good, all the important goodies are in the free version, I normally dont trust reviews on anything but they do look genuine and nearly all are good.

Malnutrition is one of the best in the field, but it has to be said you were one of the lucky ones as a lot of the later strains of ransomware are unrecoverable from. About all that can be saved is whatever files remain unencrypted. I think Mal might agree that none of the so called ransomware protectors are infallible and the best form of protection is just plain taking care, and ensuring you have regular system backups remote (read not connected) from the host PC.

Thanks Gus, yes I realise how lucky I was, and lucky to find this forum. I did have my files backed up but losing my PC would have been a disaster as I dont have much money. I read about the problems in dealing with and preventing ransomware and its scary stuff, I also realise there's no magic shield. I'm already very careful but still it got me, all I did was follow a link from Google images and clicked on the wrong thing.
I'm totally against Government intervention and censorship as I can see where its going, but the authorities need to cooperate more between between countries and act together, there should be no "safe haven" for these criminals, the authorities need to leave ordinary citizens alone and do the job their paid for instead of following some shady political agenda. Just my opinion !
