Technically not a blue screen issue but most appropriate section I guess

Yesterday my PC randomly shut down on its own (not a blue screen or freeze, it says "Shutting Down" then shuts down as if something is telling it to). Then, It frantically tried to reboot itself and kept shutting off again. But I was eventually able to reboot it. It worked fine until about thirty minutes when it happened again.

It has worked fine since then until just now and who knows when it'll happen again. I have no idea when it comes to troubleshooting and I'm honestly just freaked out by it.

I should mention I was doing nothing special either time it has happened, the computer was just idle or browsing chrome, and my PC has never done anything like this before.

The only thing similar is about a month ago, where once a day or every two days, my pc would blue screen or freeze and the error code said something about drivers. But that stopped happening about two weeks ago, I imagine Windows just fixed itself or something.

And now I'm having this issue since yesterday where it says "Shutting Down" out of nowhere and shuts itself down. Help is appreciated.

Edit: My PC is about 4 1/2 years old. I have tried running some virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes but nothing turns up (although I have gotten plenty of notifications from Avast saying its aborted connection with some stuff from some sites I visit and I just ignore it).

Windows 10 by the way, and I'm using an old, sketchy power bar, although I've never had any issues with it.

What you say looks to be correct in that something is telling Windows to shut down.

Have you tried refreshing Windows, this will reinstall Windows but keep your personal files and settings, see Microsoft info here

Avast is a bit of a monster these days and very few forums and most likely only Avast recommend it but if you are getting security warnings from Avast do you really think that it is wise to ignore them, you are inviting the bad guys onto your system by doing so

Thanks for the reply, I will try to look into refreshing Windows when I have the opportunity.

The notifications just say that Avast has successfully aborted connection with some bad things, I never actually get a virus or anything, So I just go on with my day. Maybe I should stop using those sites tho... lol

Edit: Just wondering what you think:

1. A lot of people seem to think its PSU related? Someone even suggested it could be a faulty power button/connection or faulty keyboard if it has a button to initiate shutdown?

2. Do you think the actual blue screens I was getting two weeks ago are related to this or was that a separate issue that somehow fixed itself?

3. Does this pattern tell you anything: it seems to happen once a day but will shut down two to three times in quick succession before I can get it to stay on until it happens the next day?

4. Finally, is any significant damage being done to my PC when this happens? Besides the sign that something is wrong/possibly failing, of course.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry but I only comment on what I see for myself and for now would just try the Windows refresh and go from there, if that sorts things for you great but if not we will have our own plan of action here.

You are welcome :)
