Hello,

I have a dell latitude 7480 and i can't solve an issu.

It randomly go into sleeping mode less than a second and come to the login screen right after. It sometime does that 2 or 3 time befor the login screen came back.

I suspect this probleme to existe because of a probleme with my RAM.

Fot a little bit of contexte i had a RAM error with this pc (who had 16go of RAM), it was not able to boot proparly, to solve this probleme i juste took of one 8go slot. So now i juste have 8. It solve the ram error but not the random sleeping mode problem.

But I buy a new 8go of Ram and this is what hapen:

8go of new ram in eather of the 2slot -> Don't boot

8go of old ram in the "dead slot" -> Dont boot

8go of old ram in the working slot -> Boot

16 go of RAM (old and new) in the two slot -> Dont boot

If you have any question ask me.

Thanks for your help.

Some confusion there as Sleep is a component of Windows meaning that if Windows has not successfully loaded there is no way that Sleep is or can be responsible for the behaviour that you describe.

Do you have a link to the new RAM that you purchased.

Have you tried connecting the notebook to an external screen using the HDMI port, this to rule out a possible loose/damaged MB to screen video cable.

Paste probleme fix :

Present probleme not fix :
It solve the ram error but not the random sleeping mode problem.

I am on linux mint and not on windows.
The linux os boot and i can used it but it go into sleeping mod at random time.

Sorry for not being clear.

The RAM that i buy was 8go of crucial (ref: CT8G4SFRA32A.M8FRS)

It can't be an SSD probleme because the probleme happen when i am on a bootable usb live os.

I respond to you post below.
Sorry for not using the reply option.

how long ago was Mint installed?
any reason why you converted to a Linux distro?
was the sleeping issue happening when on Windows?

I never used windows on this pc. I now the issu is not caused by mint because it hapen when i am on a live usb (Tails for example).

what happened to the installed copy of Windows the laptop would have come with?

does the sleep mode issue happen when the old 8GB of RAM is used?
and it happens with Linux running from a USB or from the internal SSD?

When i buy the computer (it was used) i immediately install linux mint (full disk install not a dual boot).
Yes it hapen when the old 8gb of RAM is used.
And It happen with both linux running on a a usb and my internal ssd.

sorry - out of ideas.
Linux is not my jam - I've only ever tinkered, briefly, and ages ago.

my last throw of the dice would be a fresh re-install of a distro of your choice - but probably not Mint, just to eliminate it's drivers being the cause.

I’ve never used Linux so cannot comment.
If the problem is the RAM then are the sticks correct for the make & model of the pc?

3rd with no experience in that distribution of Linux.

I had a semi-similar issue that was cleared up by reinstalling my OS and unplugging my computer from the surge protector I was using at the time.

If the issue follows you across different distributions, I'd guess a hardware/driver issue.

Not linux either
Does this happen with the power supply plugged in.
Can you remove the battery and run with just the power supply plugged in?
Yes it happen with the power supply plugged in.
I never try to use it without battery in it cause is build in the laptop.
