Hey,

I wanted to reach out to see if anyone can shed some light on these pc problems i’ve been having.

The problems started when i tried to update my win10 version. settings said i needed some important security fixes so i went ahead and tried to install the update. it didn’t work. i got an error code which i learned meant i was missing important files (it didn’t specify which) so i used the sfc /scannow command and cmd said that my problems were solved. i cleared my update cache and re-downloaded the update. once downloaded i tried to install the update again. didn’t work. same error, same issues as before. i then kinda gave up and left it for a week.

after that break i tried again to fix the issue. used sfc again, tried DSIM command but didn’t work cause i had no corrupted files, despite what the update error said. i then got a notification to change my update times (like the preferences for auto update). i changed it to like 2pm-6pm (incorrect times in retrospect as it was like 2:34 at that point and i was often on my pc for that entire “down time” period) and my pc randomly restarted. i assumed it restarted because of the times i had set so i logged in again and altered the auto update times to a correct period.

unfortunately i must have done something wrong as my computer began to restart randomly. it started randomly, then was every 1-2 hours, then 30mins, then every 7-10mins, and finally every 2-3mins. at this point i thought a virus was causing these issues so i did a full system scan using Norton Antivirus but found no issues.

in a last ditch effort i wiped my pc, hoping that that would solve the issue but no, it didn’t. my pc would restart every 2-3mins which meant i was never able to complete the windows 10 setup. at this point i decided to go into BIOS to see if i could diagnose the issue from there, no luck. my dad had suggested the possibility of the restarting being a result of overheating but after looking in BIOS after 1 of the random restarts my CPU temp was 29c, not nearly hot enough to cause any issues. but after mucking around in BIOS - fiddling with my CPU fan settings for a while - i realised my pc had not restarted yet. in fact, no matter how long i spend in BIOS, my pc never restarts.

i then thought maybe if i reinstall the OS that would fix things as my issues with updating my windows version seemed to have caused the issues in the first place. i also realised that my pc didn’t restart on its usual schedule of every 2-3mins during the OS reinstall. weird. so my pc only restarts every 2-3mins during the windows setup process and while i’m logged in, but not in BIOS or during an OS reinstall. huh.

i successfully reinstalled the OS and the stars aligned as i managed to complete the setup process. i logged in to find that my pc doesn’t recognise my wifi card and so i have no internet connection. i’m hoping that, if this restarting issue is resolved, i can recover some of my files & photos with data recovery programs, but that’s it for now.

Thanks if you read it all. i will seriously consider any and all suggestions in the comments.

Cheers

first up, sadly, with all the disk usage you have been giving the drive, it would be extremely unlikely that you will be able to recover any files.
and the ones you may find will be fragments at best.
but hey - worth a shot, but not a comparison to having a good, tested, backup process in place. :)

the restarts could still have be temperature related - in the power supply, the processor, the graphics chip, a motherboard sensor - who knows.

they could have also been bad memory, no need to talk about possible testing of that theory now, as you have the PC back to normal.

to get the wifi adapter installed, you'll have to go to the manufactures website and download its software, obviously from a PC with internet connection.
or plug yours into the modem via an ethernet cable for now.

i should clarify, my PC is still restarting every 2-3mins.

let's get your PC specs.

get Speccy from here; https://www.piriform.com/speccy/builds
in Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
now you can paste (Ctrl+V) that link into a post.

One component Speccy doesn’t cover is the Power Supply Unit, so please also include the make/model of the PSU.
