Hi everyone
First post so go easy on me!
I have just returned from a holiday to find both my laptop and desktop using win7/outlook2007 and virgin email will not connect to the server and goes into offline mode. They worked fine prior to holiday. The laptop was tried first and simply failed as described, the desktop was ok yesterday but has failed in same way this morning. Strange thing was the laptop on first try this morning was OK then it subsequently failed. I can receive my virgin emails on both mobiles, android and apple, my virgin web mail works its just outlook which is frustrating. I appreciate they are now old etc. I found a thread on the Virgin community but they simply blamed the combination of OS and SW,
If Virgin have stopped it their end is there a way of telling? I have tried MS help etc etc. Hopefully someone can tell me the answer even if it is get a new OS and SW!!

sounds like your Outlook settings don't match what your email provider is expecting.
maybe they have changed something their end and your PC's need adjusting, whereas your mobile has automatically picked up the change.

their website should have an area that gives the settings required, or you can ring their support line and they will talk you through the settings required in Outlook.

Hi Bruce
I will double check and report back

you'd be chasing the settings for;
  • POP or IMAP or Microsoft 365 or other
  • username/password for account
  • incoming and outgoing mail server: mail.yourISP.com (for example)
  • encryption type: TSL, SSL, or none
  • port number: 465, 587 (outgoing) or 993 (incoming imap) or 995 (incoming POP)
but some account types are auto so it all depends. :)

Not showing any change from previous setting. imap 993, smtp 465

Hi Bruce, I have set up POP3 account alongside my IMAP account and it works on POP3 account! POP3 has no encryption so not good there but does work! How is this possible?

if your POP ports are 110 for incoming and 25 for outgoing then yes, you aren't using encryption.
any other numbers and you are.

465 outgoing is usually the recommended for SSL or TLS.

POP is fine if you want all your email in one place or are prepared to accept your mailbox on your PC will be slightly different to that on your phone.
with POP, emails you responded to will show in that Sent Items folder but not on other devices.

IMAP solves this by syncing all your mail folders across all your devices that have the same account setup.

This was on laptop using same email etc. I will try tomorrow on desktop and report back. Thanks for help tonight.

Umm, in which case I need to make IMAP work, oh the modern world!

agreed, IMAP is the better of the two if you are checking the one account on more than one device.
back in the day, when I only had POP accounts, I just either put up with it, or made one device the 'main' checking device.

but it still sounds like you need to double check the account settings with your Provider.

good luck!

Virginmedia settings should be thus:
imap.virginmedia.com
Port 993
SSL on
smtp.virginmedia.com
Port 465
SSL on

If you prefer pop then pop3.virginmedia.com
Port 995
SSL on.

Hi both, I didn't get chance to try yesterday but fired up both tonight and surprise surprise all is now working again, I didn't change anything!!!
Since MS won't have made any changes it leads me to think Virgin made a change. They will never admit that as they already said ' well i works on your phone and webmail so its your OS / SW'. I have given enough time to MS / Virgin so am just pleased its fixed. Thanks for all your help guys.
I have left POP3 in place just in case for future and updated to 995 / SSL to provide encryption.
