I was having an issue with goodcaster virus on my dad's laptop...I got so frustrated that I started uninstalling softwares...I uninstalled some visual c++ softwares and avg antivirus etc...then suddenly the system crashed...and it has became super slow... The D: drive is gone...not logging in on safe mode...tried recovering to a specific time which is dated looonnnggg m back in 2017...I guess he hasn't taken any more back up since then...but it is also not working...I think I'll have to reinstall the OS...but currently my country is going through lock down due to corona virus outbreak...so if anyone could help me on this matter it would be great...

Welcome to PCHF Subhadeep1994,

Have you checked for a recovery partition on the HDD?

If the computer will still boot into Windows, post an expanded screenshot of Disk Manager for us "how to" below;

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
2. Click on the System and Security link.
If you're viewing the Large icons or Small iconsview of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.
3. In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.
4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.
5. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.

After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... after typing in any response you have... click on Upload a File to add the screenshot.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

Didn't think I would get a reply so quickly! Anyway thanks for cheking in. But I think nobody would be able to help me now coz my laptop isn't logging in right now...I know the basic repairing things like booting into safe mode or rolling back to a certain point where it was fine...but nothing seems to work...and actually I am writing this on my mobile phone so all the images am taking are too large to share...when am trying to boot it in safe mode it's stuck on the files list( black screen...files checking with white font)...

What I did wrong was, I messed with "regedit" ...to remove the goodcaster virus I started changing settings and deleting softwares and all those...I came across a youtube video where it suggested to clean registry...so I opened "regedit" and followed the steps...the next thing I know is it crashed and stopped responding...the D: drive got deleted...I have another partition in E: drive...it was there when the last time it logged on...but anyway... I know these r very non-essential informations and its difficult to help me with so little info...but still if there is something I could provide u so that u can help plz let me know...

Ouch, you have learned the hard way that if not an expert user you should steer well clear of the registry at all costs.

Bad news is that at the very bare minimum you will need Windows 7 media to repair the OS and in a worse case scenario clean install Windows.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the notebook for us.

D: is normally the drive letter that is allocated to an optical drive when one is present which the notebook specs says there is, have you created your own partitions on the HDD, if yes, before doing so did you check for a recovery partition, if yes, was there one and is it still on the drive.

If using a computer and not a mobile phone, please avoid adding multiple posts while waiting for us to reply to your last, edit your last post to include anything that you wish to add, this will ensure nothing gets overlooked which can sometimes happen if a thread has more than one page, it avoids filling up folks inbox and last but not least it amounts to bumping your thread which puts folk to the bottom of any reply list.

The partition was already there. No there was no recovery partition or I haven't check if there was any. I created a local back up in my external hard disk but it is not upto date. So I might loose some of the recent data and that is why I asked whether it is possible or not to recover the drive.
 
Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help any and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks.

We can help you with trying to access the HDD in an attempt to recover your data but you are going to need a computer that has internet access, a disk burner and a blank CD or as an alternative to the burner and blank CD a blank USB thumb drive.

Curious, not that it really matters but you said in your OP that this was your fathers computer :unsure:

I liked your curiosity . Yes indeed it is my father's laptop. But it's difficult to write "my father's laptop" and explain everything in first person everytime so I changed it to "my laptop". So you know. I have kind of screwed up. Anyway to the technical point... I have my own laptop with internet access and blank USB thumb drive with 8gb space. Or I have one external HDD with around 900 gb space. There is no CD/DVD writer attached on my laptop. I use HP ProBook 440 G2.

CD Burner (CDRW) Drive,

Blank CD,

Extra Storage Device (USB Flash Drive, External Hard Drive)

1. Save these files to your Desktop/Burn Your Live CD:
2. Set your boot priority in the BIOS to CD-ROM first, Hard Drive Second

    • Start the computer/press the power button
    • Immediately start tapping the appropriate key to enter the BIOS, aka "Setup"

      (Usually shown during the "Dell" screen, or "Gateway" Screen)
    • Once in the BIOS, under Advanced BIOS Options change boot priority to:

      CD-ROM 1st, Hard Drive 2nd
    • Open your ROM drive and insert the disk
    • Press F10 to save and exit
    • Agree with "Y" to continue
    • Your computer will restart and boot from the Puppy Linux Live CD

3. Recover Your Data

  • Once Puppy Linux has loaded, it is actually running in your computer's Memory (RAM). You will see a fully functioning Graphical User Interface similar to what you normally call "your computer". Internet access may or may not be available depending on your machine, so it is recommended you print these instructions before beginning. Also, double clicking is not needed in Puppy. To expand, or open folders/icons, just click once. Puppy is very light on resources, so you will quickly notice it is much speedier than you are used to. This is normal. Ready? Let's get started.



    3a. Mount Drives
    • Click the Mount Icon located at the top left of your desktop.

    • A Window will open. By default, the "drive" tab will be forward/highlighted. Click on Mount for your hard drive.
    • Assuming you only have one hard drive and/or partition, there may be only one selection to mount.
    • USB Flash Drives usually automatically mount upon boot, but click the "usbdrv" tab and make sure it is mounted.
    • If using an external hard drive for the data recovery, do this under the "drive" tab. Mount it now.

    3b. Transfer Files.
    • At the bottom left of your desktop a list of all hard drives/partitions, USB Drives, and Optical Drives are listed with a familiar looking hard drive icon.
    • Open your old hard drive i.e. sda1
    • Next, open your USB Flash Drive or External Drive. i.e. sdc or sdb1
    • If you open the wrong drive, simply X out at the top right corner of the window that opens. (Just like in Windows)
    • From your old hard drive, drag and drop whatever files/folders you wish to transfer to your USB Drive's Window.

    For The Novice: The common path to your pictures, music, video, and documents folders for XP is: Documents and Settings >> All Users (or each individual name of each user, for Vista and above C:\Users\$USERNAME\[...]. CHECK All Names!) >> Documents >> You will now see My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos.



    Remember to only click once! No double clicking! Once you drag and drop your first folder, you will notice a small menu will appear giving you the option to move or copy. Choose COPY each time you drag and drop.



    YOU ARE DONE!!! Simply click Menu >> Mouse Over Shutdown >> Reboot/Turn Off Computer. Be sure to plug your USB Drive into another working windows machine to verify all data is there and transferred without corruption. Congratulations!

I have downloaded the puppy linux iso and put that in a usb flash drive ( FAT32 formatted) using Universal USB Installer because in my laptop (HP Probook 440 G2) I do not have CD burner. So plz let me know whether it is possible for me to do this using USB flash drive or do I have to have a CD burner?

If it is possible then

in my dad's laptop when I am trying to change the boot order I am getting the following options-
1. Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive
2. Notebook Hard Drive
3. USB Floppy
4. USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Drive
5. USB CD/DVD ROM Drive

Now which one do i choose?

wow! you saved me! Got everything back. Thank you so much for the much needed support.

Now I need another help. Can I clean Install windows 7 using lupu-528.iso by myself once I recover all my data from my dad's laptop? because it is Linux Puppy OS which am pretty sure my dad wont be able to use. So I need to install windows 7 in his PC. plz let me know how can I clean install windows 7 .

That is great news and a job well done on your behalf (y)

A quick check for you to do, restart the notebook while continually tapping the F11 key to see if there is a recovery partition present.

well I did press F11 key and something weird menu appeared. so plz let me know where to look for the recovery partition. and if there is no recovery partition then what is the process of installing windows 7? and also if there is a recovery partition present then how do i install new windows OS.

You will need a 4GB or above USB thumb drive and the product key for Windows that is installed on the problem computer.
