My laptop is using a lot of RAM (~40%) even when everything is closed. After I open up only Chrome with a few tabs, and VS Code for programming, It's already on 80%. I did some google, and it lead me to think that I have a memory leak. I'm a computer noob, so I was just spamming youtube tutorials to fix windows and chrome, but nothing worked out for me so far. When I restart the laptop It calms down for a while, but its just a matter of time before it starts to make loud fan noise and getting hot again. Any help appreciated!

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Hi, thanks for the help. This is the URL: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/AzfhPpPaMV3fUzzlJ4Lhhju

from what you are describing, that is not a memory leak, rather some process chewing up a lot a memory.
could be something as harmless as Windows Updates, system maintenance or a scheduled task like a virus scan.
or a perfect storm, multiple background tasks all vying for CPU access.

a memory leak is when the refresh cycle of the memory chip isn't received in time to keep the volatile memory cell fresh and its contents therefore gets 'lost'.

from that Task Manager screen shot, click on the memory colum header to resort the column into descending order, that will show you the culprit using the most memory.

Bruce is correct and the problem/s that you are having are down to a couple of things.

Someone has made a mess of partitioning the SSD, 256GB is what I recommend for Windows 10 on its own but your C: partition is a measly 79GB and being down to only 14% of free storage space on it means that there is nowhere for any further major updates such as version 20H2 which is where we are up to now.

You look to only have a single 8GB stick of RAM which means that it can only work in single channel at 1200MHz rather than the 2400MHz you would be getting in dual channel by having two matching sticks of RAM.

There is evidence of Bitdefender AV having been installed on the computer at some point but not completely removed when it was uninstalled.

We can help you with this but there is a bit of work involved so we will wait for you to get back to us for now.
