I started this thread in response to a thread I opened that is now closed.

The url of that thread is https://pchelpforum.net/t/windows-is-freezing-after-a-fresh-format-with-minimal-installations.73496/

I thought I fixed the problem, so the thread was closed but it happened again. The computer froze but only after opening a game. It doesn't appear to be freezing while I am typing or some other task that does not require much graphics.

I spent about 2 ½ hours recording audio from a story that I have written, then I left the computer for about 1 ½ hours and then my son go on it. He loaded fortnite and that caused it to freeze.

As I mentioned, things that don’t contain much graphics, like typing, surfing the net etc don’t appear to make it freeze as I am able to type this message fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been having this problem, on and off for quite some time.

Thanks,
Dave

let's get the PC specs.

get Speccy from here; https://www.piriform.com/speccy/builds
in Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
now you can paste (Ctrl+V) that link into a post.
One component Speccy doesn’t cover is the Power Supply Unit, so please also include the make/model of the PSU.

@David Paton - threads that receive no updates from the originator after a few days come up as candidates for closing.

if you still need help, give us some updates otherwise we think the thread is abandoned. :)

It is strange as sometimes it freezes in games but other times it doesn't. I just turned the computer on, had to leave the computer for several minutes and when I came back, there was a blue screen error on the screen.

any chance you noted down what the Blue Screen of Death error was?
there probably was an error code, something like 0x000003fc and a geeky error text like "boot volume not found".

some findings from the Speccy report - your CPU is quiet old, and the BIOS is dated 2010, I'd be checking the motherboard manufacture's website for an update.
next is your memory, looks like slot 1 & 3 are the same, and at some point you got more memory and while slot 2 & 4 are the same - they are different to the original memory.

so you could remove the RAM from slot 2 & 4 and run the rig and see if the BSoD repeats.
if so, put back slot 2 & 4 and this time remove slots 1 & 3 and if if that helps.
that should determine if it's mismatched memory or just plain faulty memory.

get back to us with your progress. :)

The error had a sad face and said your device needs to restart, sorry I didn't make a note of the error. The same thing has happened recently though and I am sure that the error said memory management.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them and get back to you.

I checked the website and it is the latest version of the bios.

Have you followed thru with post 7 ? Looks like your ram may be faulty.... At least try as @Bruce has suggested....

Do you think that the other 2 sticks have failed or are they just uncompatible with the 2 sticks that appear to be working?

according to Speccy (and it does have a couple of known bugs) all your sticks are 2GB each.

maybe.... the two you think are 4GB are actually only 2GB and they came as a kit of 2 x 2GB sticks and the sticker on the memory says 4GB, but if you keep reading, there will be something that says Kit 1 of 2.
I only mention this because I've made the same mistake. :)

as to failed - not sure, as to incompatible, slight more sure.

the Gigabyte website says the mobo can handle up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, max speed 2200Mhz.
I couldn't find the max capacity of each slot.
so maybe getting 2 new 4GB DDR3 sticks would be a start.
maybe 2 x 8GB would be even better as long as you could find out if the board would support it.
