First time poster so sorry if missing information/details.

Basically in the past week I've encountered games (through steam) dropping to an unplayable 25fps (usually avg 80-110 depending). I've figured out that alt-tabbing out and back in will return the game to the avg fps. I've also noticed that trying to continue playing when it's at 25fps will sometimes cause the game to crash, my main monitor for gaming will go black, flicker some glitching/distortion and then return to my desktop. My second monitor remains on and fine the entire time. I've also noticed that youtube and twitch videos that were paused will then show a green screen instead of where it was last paused.

My CPU is fine, and everything else I do runs smoothly and with ease. I just want to diagnose this issue before it gets serious.

CPU is a 6700k and GPU is a GTX1080 Windforce. Both are overclocked but stay well within the usual reccomended avg's if not then usually well below. The monitor that seems to be having issues is a acer predator xb271hu with G-Sync enable, with the overclocked framerate to 165hz. Those are the only settings I've changed. My Nvidia drivers were updated maybe 1-2 weeks ago so assuming all up to date.

I hope that covers everything you may need to know, and thanks in advance for any replies :)

Thankyou :) maybe worth noting that it isn't an issue of whether the GPU can handle any given game, as I've opened several games and reducing settings to very low and back to very high produces absolutely no change in the 25fps. Also maybe worth noting that I'm yet to find anything specific to replicate/simulate my issue as it's several days between when I experience issues. The closest I've come to working out a way is when I leave my PC idle for maybe 5+ hours, I will return at it will be frozen until I input any of my peripherals, at which point after maybe a minute I regain control (which may be a separate issue altogether).

Hi AdderallSloth, Welcome to PCHF! :)

Its possible that you have an unstable overclock and the GPU might be throttling to protect itself which is why the FPS is so low on games that you launch. I would try resetting your CPU and GPU back to stock clocks and see if the same behavior occurs.

Lets also check your system temperatures. Download and run Open Hardware Monitor. Then while the computer is idle post a screenshot of your systems temperatures using Open Hardware Monitor in your next reply.

Thankyou for your reply! I use the Aorus Graphic Engine app and it is set to OC Mode. I have noticed that my frame rate returns to being perfectly normal if I hit the off switch on my second monitor. Have yet to try returning my GPU to normal mode yet. I have attached a screenshot of my PC at Idle.
